A good introduction to the state-space approach
This is a very good introductory book on the topic. Particularly, the author did pretty well in linear vector spaces and its applications. One distinguished feature of this book is the vast amount of worked problems attached to the main text of each chapter. Make sure you study as many these problems as possible (and the better derive as many as possible yourself) -- it is an indispensable part of the book. But compared to the number of the worked problems, the main text sometimes appears to be not sufficient. The book is of some mathematical sophistication, yet it is not rigorous. It can serve as a good starting point for a motivated student to build his mathematical maturity for control theory. One shortcoming of the book is that some theories are not well explained and a motivated student may want to derive by himself to fill in the gaps. But this can be beneficial for the student.

Good introduction to modern control theory
Modern Control Theory (3rd Ed) was required reading for a graduate course I took on the subject. I took this course with very limited knowledge of classical control theory (Bode and Nyquist analysis, etc.), though I did have a good amount of intuition from practical experience. The text is well organized and very readable. It dedicates a chapter to reviewing matrix algebra (which was much appreciated in my case, having been out of school for a number of years). I now refer to this text periodically when I encounter a control problem that lends itself to formal treatment (i.e., I have a decent model to which I can apply the tools presented in the text). This is the best book I've found on the subject.

Hard Read!
Damm this book is difficult to comprehend. If it wasn't for my instructor to teach us, there is probably no way you can absorb this book cleanly. If you simply revel in reading a book with usage of every greek character known to man, and then some, then this is the book for you. Countless variables + theories = CluelessThank god my instructor taught us everything we needed to know on the board. The only times we had to refer to the book was for the Homework problems. This book is like it came from the past, 3 decades ago. Don't get me wrong, this material is not too difficult if you already have a grasp of Linear Algebra (which supremely helps). A TI-89 or similar calculator is a life-saver as well, for the matrices. But if you wanted to learn this material yourself, you could can certain do better! This is an example:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0131457330/qid=1134632969/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/104-0453185-3538347?n=507846&s=books&v=glanceHow do I know? Because I own both books, because I took two Control classes at the same time, with the same teacher. The above book is very clean, and what I mean by clean is that you learn very quickly. It's 'bam, bam, bam'. Of course, some might argue it's not a typical "graduate" book, but at least you won't wake up in the middle of the night, sweat dripping from a nightmare about greek symbols. Trust me - if you can find a bookstore with these two books, go ahead and compare them yourself. It's like night and day.If you HAVE to buy this book for a class, pay close attention in class, and pray to the Gods you have a decent instructor, and you should be fine. If you want to learn about Controls, and thinking about getting this book, look elsewhere. The material from other book I compared are pretty similar; the one I compared does not go into matrices and linear systems as much as Brogan's book. So don't expect that one to completely replace it. It is used only as an example of how other books are more easily 'readable' than this one. This review was written for your best interest in mind!

Good Book
Material covered in a university higher level course. Content is a little all over the place for my taste but overall pretty good. Only thing is that the text is a little dry but with that much algebra its hard not to be.

Liked mainly the chapters on Linear Algebra
Purchased primarily to expand my knowledge of Linear Algebra.

Poor explanations
The book covers the material but i feel is very vague and makes doing the problems difficult. The only saving grace is there are a bunch of sample problems at the end of the chapter. Also all questions answers are in the book so they can be checked.

This book is very easy to read.
This book was delivered new. The price is less than at Varney's. I like the paper quality. I aldo like the illustrated/solved problems or solutions to problems.

low quality paper
The quality of this copy is extremely low compared to the price that I paid for it. I will look for options to return this copy. This quality is certainly not $256 worth.
