Three stars.
If you're like me, amateur hacker but new to android, this book is somewhat helpful, but it could be better organized and more complete. It's really not well written. You kind of have to dig to get the most out of it. I had rooted my smartphone using an update.zip file and was trying to find out how (and why) it worked. I still don't know. The book seems to imply, but doesn't say, that some smartphones will accept an update.zip file without checking to see what's in it, so you can use this weakness to slip in a file that will root your phone. I guess I got something out of the book and wouldn't ask for my money back, but I was hoping for more.

Perfect for the novice
I had a smart phone that ran on an earlier version software. I bought this book as a primer to understand how to upgrade the phone software as the manufacturer was not going to upgrade. Some of the information has become obsolete but with further research it helped me upgrade my old phone.

Lacks technical depth
I was a bit disappointed with this book, maybe I expected more from it. I was hoping for something that would discuss Android internals, maybe a bit about compiling your own firmware from at least Cyanogenmod or AOSP, but instead this is a book largely about rooting an Android device, something for which there are many free guides available on the Internet. If you know very little about how to root an Android device and want a good walkthrough including a lengthy but comprehensive tutorial on the command line, or you have any of the devices covered in the second half, then this is an ok book. If you're someone who was expecting a book on hacking Android to do what you want and you're already au-fait with how to root a device, like the droids in star wars, this isn't the book you're looking for.

Excellent Tutorial
What can I say about this book? Do-It-Yourself Tutor, Brilliant author, Easy-to-follow guides, etc. In fact it is my Bible so long as Hacking Android is concern. I am now confident in choosing the way I want my Android device to be. Considering the benefits you acquire by using this book, the price is right for me.

Great Book
Bought it to de-mistify the rooting process. This gave me the confidence to go for it. I now have a rooted Nexus 7. Reading the book enabled me to understand why the process the first time didn't work, and how to get the rooting to work properly.

If not the first book you order it should be the second one on Android
It clear gives you the answers that you may need to understand how to root or hack your own mobile phone and help prevent others from gaining access!
