Old dog learning new tricks
This slid ruler really has helped to visually see scales and to help understand the basic structures of major and minor pentatonic and the root notes. The YouTube videos also are a great companion and tutorial to understand how the ruler functions. The manual is also beneficial but takes a moment to grasp the details.

It all makes sense now
I love this device. What minimal music theory I learned was always demonstrated on a piano - but I play guitar. I fundamentally understood majors and minors and kind of grasped 3rds, 5ths, and 7ths, but it never all fit together before. THIS has been the tool that I needed to help my brain make all the connections. Now, the CAGED positions, as well as the Triad exercises, pentatonic scales, and diatonic scales - shoot, this even fits in the blue notes!I don't know how to describe it, but before, each thing I learned stayed isolated in my brain. Now, it all fits together, and it is making me a much better guitarist! The compact size is actually great. But (being old enough to have actually used a mathematical sliding ruler in grade school) my old eyes would love to get one at 1.5 times the size. Heck, to be fair, I guess I'd pay 1.5 times the price. lol.I love this tool!

Great Tool, For learning how the scales work with the caged system.
It's a great way to see how the caged system works with the scales. It's an excellent learning tool; my only complaint is that the font needs to be bolder so it's easier to see.

Superb tool, and well worth the price
Excellent, A++ learning tool for pentatonic scales, diatonic and minor scales, blues scales, and all seven modes. If you learn these five shapes backward and forward and inside-out (each shape is a different color on the slide rule), you will be the master of your fretboard. I bought it primarily to help me unravel the Mystery of the Modes -- I've tried several different ways to do this, but none of them are as visual, clear, and simple as this slide rule.Is it worth thirty bucks? For me, absolutely yes. I've spent more than that on flash cards and posters, and none of them have helped me half as much as this slide rule. Yes, it's $30 for paper and plastic -- but you're paying for the careful thought and planning that went into the layout and design of this very useful teaching tool.Customer service is also superb. I received a defective ruler (a couple of the cutout windows were missing). I contacted them, they said they had a defective run, and would send me a new one as soon as it was available. Took a couple weeks, but it got here, as promised. Well done! The con's don't matter very much: 1) It smells funky, like the mothballs and cedar in my grandmother's closet. I think it's the laminate coating, on the inside of the plastic sleeve. The smell fades after a couple weeks. 2) The instruction sheet crams way too much information into a small space, and isn't all that helpful. It would be better if they cut it by about 50%. The tool is so simple, though, that anyone who's already been exposed to fretboard maps won't have any trouble at all.Thank you, Rise & Shine -- you've made me a happier guitar student!

Tiny Tool - Not for All...
I appreciate why there are so many positive reviews of this item and I'm sure for some people this is a great tool; however, for me, I found it ergonomically lacking, in that the insert wouldn't slide easily and also the characters were printed in such a tiny font that they were rendered almost unreadable for this ol' fella. For someone with better eyesight, dextrous hands, and a decent grasp of music theory already, I imagine this would work fine; alas, for me it was too difficult, and because I couldn't justify shelling out so much for something that I wasn't sufficiently happy with, I have opted to return it for a refund.

Pleasantly surprised
I was pleasantly surprised by how effective this little tool is. It is borderline ingenious. I just started playing guitar a few months ago. However, I have a solid understanding of music theory from playing piano for years. I think this tool is best for someone with foundational knowledge in music theory. I think understanding these concepts at a baseline will make the tool more useful:1) intervals (how to build pentatonic scales, how to build major/minor scales)2) basic chord shapes (C, A, G, E, D) - check out some YouTube videos on the "CAGED" system because the positions identified on the tool follow this system.3) not absolutely necessary but I think having a basic grasp of modes (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, etc.) can also be useful because the modes are listed at the bottom of the tool. There is probably some benefit of this tool for every level of guitarist (beginner, intermediate, and potentially even advanced). I understand the complaints that the font is small. I also get that it may seem a bit pricey. I have had it for a little over a week and I've already studied it for 2-3 hours, so I know it is going to be worth it. I would love to see a plastic version of this with a snapping mechanism as you slide from key to key.

Too Cool Tool
This slider ruler product deserves a standing ovation. I'm an ex-guitarist from decades past and am relearning the fundamentals of music theory and finger work through the pentatonic major and minor scales, modes, notes, and fretboard. This ruler shows in vivid Technicolor detail the scale shapes and notes, making them easy to understand, learn, and transpose to every key. Running through the scales both individually and linked to each other up and down the neck is now a blast. Also marked are optional off-scale notes that can add to the basic shapes. The ruler should last for years, is high-quality, very portable, a dream to read, logical, durable, and comes with an excellent operation and example sheet that explains and enhances the operation with diagrams and best practices recommendations. The email product support is excellent, too. Well worth the money, highly recommended. And very cool.
