If your firm's strategy can be applied to any other firm, you don't have a very good one.
Imagine that your organization is an innovation powerhouse. Imagine that other companies adopt your strategies and not the other way around. Imagine that every single person in your organization is hailed as an innovator. Too good to be true right? Not so.Author Rowan Gibson and Peter Skarzynski set out to jumpstart your innovation efforts in their book Innovation to the Core. Distilled from various examples of companies that 'DO' innovation, they present a blueprint that we can use and also 'DO' innovation. But before you set out to 'DO' innovation you want to start with creating the conditions to foster innovation, then develop the skills you need to innovate and then a process to bring it all together and produce new products and services. Innovation to the core shows you how!Pragmatic is the key word to describe the contents of this book, written as a guide this is THE best book I've read on enterprise innovation and have recommended it more times than I can remember. I actually used the chapter on business model innovation to give a friend of mine a big picture view of his online car sales business and brainstorm new approaches to compete. If you're familiar with Gary Hamel's work from Competing for the Future, Leading the Revolution and The Future of Management you will absolutely want to read Innovation to the Core. Most of those insights are presented here in such a simple way that any startup or lone entrepreneur, small business that wants to grow, the mid-size business and the corporate juggernauts can put to use.It has a 5 star rating at Amazon and with good reasons. The people, the skills and the process it's all here. You should follow Rowan Gibson on Twitter @rowangibson and let him know what you think.

STILL AMONG THE BEST BOOKS EVER ON INNOVATION!
This was one of the first books that I read on innovation, and it continues to be a favorite. It's an easy read yet packed with excellent information for someone wanting the "big picture" on innovation as well as a good reference book. Readers shouldn't let the length of this book scare them. Its almost 300 pages don't need to be read in any particular order, and all of the information in it is so meaningful and written so well, that readers will likely want more after having read the entire book.Innovation to the Core is one of the few books that I've read more than once, and yet I continue to come back for more. I'm still in awe as to how the authors covered so much ground without it feeling overwhelming. There are a lot of books on innovation on the market today, but this one takes a deep dive and underscores the importance of a systemic and sustainable approach. If I could give it a higher rating than 5 stars, I would!

Excellent primer on corporate innovation
I found this book on a recommended reading list about corporate innovation. I have little education in business management and am not familiar with the literature, but I found this book to be an excellent primer on how large organizations can embed innovation as a core value and process. Instead of relegating innovation to a small R&D cell, the authors advocate building a custom-tailored innovation architecture to embed innovation throughout the organization. My only critique, which is hardly fair, is that the book was published in 2008. I'm left wondering if the intervening five years would change any of the authors' views and recommendations.

Far from the best
I've read many many books on innovation, but this one was dry and painful. I only got about half way through before I got bored with it and moved on to Clayton Christensen's "How will you measure you life?". It wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't engaging and felt a little too much like a pep talk and too little like new and applicable information.

Straightforward to the Core
Innovation nowadays tops corporate agendas. But despite all the talk and enthusiasm about the importance of innovation, managers have so far found little help for innovating in a systematic way that fuels constant growth and sustained success.Innovation to the Core is straightforward and gives the reader lots of important insights and the authors are doing that in a delicate way. This is a great guide for every corporation who wants to grow and be more competitive, I strongly recommend it.
