Always a pleasent read.
Reading this book for the 5th maybe 6th and I still feel the same way.... I loved reading from Damon's POV he is just so funny and the way his mind works to solve a problem well it is unlike anything I have read. Each time I read this book I am infuriated by the way that Elena is so single minded in her love for Stefan, its like she can't do anything other than love him, like she has to love him no matter what. Damon knew what he was saying when he was trying to explain to her why they are better suited to be together:“But Elena,” Damon’s voice had life now; it was both excited and inflexible: “Can’t you see? Past history aside, you have to admit that we’re the ones that belong together. You and I are simply better suited to each other by nature. Deep down you know that, because we understand each other. We’re on the same intellectual level—”Sometimes I feel as though Damon is the only one who actually uses his mind.A fellow reader made a good point in another review where she stated that Elena needs someone to love and show her love and that is what Stefan did for her. She then needed to do that for Damon but she keeps resisting him... Just being too damn stubborn!!!

More Juice needed, but was okay
She's back, Elena's back from the dead after helping save the world in the last book from the spirit realm. Things have changed and nobody knows that Elena's back besides her inner circle of friends. Caroline's not handling it too well though. (She's nothing like the show's Caroline).Stefan's trying to protect Elena and Damon wants to do the same, but he's able to be taken over by this new evil that has come to Mystic Falls. Meredith, Bonnie, Matt, Elena and even Mrs. Flowers have to work together to stop what is happening and is to come. The girls in town are starting to change ever since the foxes came to town. Stefan goes missing and it is Damon's fault even though he is having hard time remembering what he is doing being possessed and all.Nightfall ends with Elena, Matt and Damon leaving town to find Stefan. Elena saved Damon, but at what cost? U will have to read and find out.I thought that this book could have done better yes because it was really hard to read this book and did take longer than the first four to read. I am not sure if this was before or after L.J. Smith was fired from Alloy/Harper books and a ghost writer took over, but that could be it on the failing parts of this book. I am not sure if i will re-read but I will encourage others to give it a chance because it does have some great parts.

Suspension of Disbelief
When I finished reading I was out of breath. Scenes of gratuitous gore reminded me of why I don't watch horror films. Smith's first four books in the Vampire Diaries (which are placed into two jackets) give us an Elena growing away from her Queen Bee status. She still has the spark in Nightfall, but we hear little from her. I missed her.Hiding Stefan for three-quarters of the story made me miss him too. Damon, I agree with others would not have done a massage on Elena. Possibly after she'd covered him with the Wings of Redemption and he'd been able to face his demons of the past (which by the way I feel was well played), but he wouldn't have massaged her before. The demonic creatures of the Malach and the use of several languages added connections to the stories Italian and Japanese evil creatures. However, as I mentioned I don't like walking away from a book afraid to turn my light off.In relation to suspension of disbelief, LJ Smith had me, the characters are growing, Matt is a knight, Bonnie is wiser, Meredith is stronger. However, the book also, for me, walks away from the YA level into full adult because of my above comments about horror and gore.

Just Bad Writing
I've enjoyed reading all the prior books and I watch the TV series. I almost stopped reading the book only after a few pages. The writing is awful. When reading paranormal you expect the outrageous but everything in this book seems ridiculous and stupid. The writing couldn't pull together to ridiculous and stupid to make it plausible. It makes me believe the writer who wrote the series before is not the same writer now. The story line is all over the place and reads like someone high on drugs wrote it in a drug haze. I wonder what editor in their right mind would release this book with out a firm editing hand. I continue to read only because I want to know how it will end but it is taking a long time as I read other books in between. Yes, Elena can do no wrong and it is absurd. Thankfully as others mentioned Damon is the only character and maybe Matt who make sense. Sadly there are so many other and new characters in this book that don't make sense it's scary.

DNF
I tired to read the 5th book, I read to 58% and it still wasn't for me so I gave up. I really enjoyed the first 4 but this one can not have been written by the same person... So glad the tv series was made! I've never liked a series more than the books

Not her best work, but still decent.
I loved all of L.J. Smith's books as a teenager, and even though this book had a poor review, I went ahead and got it. I agree that it has too much stuff going on. I also was disappointed that the book is set in 1992 and suddenly everyone has cell phones with video and digital cameras and personal computers. I can't believe that she would make that kind of mistake... The characters have also changed a lot from the original series, for the worse. Worse yet - these crazy WINGS of blah blah blah... weird...The Kitsune twins kind of remind me of The Forbidden Game series - I agree they would have been better in a different series, but I didn't really like them anyway...But it was nice to have something new from her, and hopefully they have more time to edit the next in the series. Hopefully she gets back to writing the way she has in the past, because she was one of my favorite authors of all time...

I ended up skimming through this book in hope it would get better.. It did not
I discovered the first book in my school library and spent years tracking down the rest. When I discovered L.J Smith had written more I was intrigued. That nostalgia burned within me, excitedly I purchased all of the latter books (5 onwards). The quality of her penmanship has decreased and none of the characters act the way should/did in books 1-4.. We have a floaty snoggy Elena with a childlike mind and everything is a dream-like hazy state.. I ended up skimming through this book in hope it would get better..It did not. She needs to just concentrate providing us with the final Nighworld book then write this rubbish..I dare not attempt to read the others..P.S please just read the first four books and disregard the series as its completely different.

The best Vampire Diaries yet!!!!!
I really loved the first two double duo installements of the Vampire Diaries so of course I wanted to read this follow up, and I was not disappointed!!!It is a little more edger than the last two, with more dark and seductive elements to it which I found fit further into the Gothic theme of the books. For fans there is more adventures with Meridith, Matt, Bonnie, Elena, Damon and Stefan and of course the regulars such as Caroline and a welcome bigger appearence from Mrs.Flowers (Stefan's Landlady). It is to note though, that although I, myself, love Elena and Stefan together, his absence from most of the book allows for the relationship between Elena and Damon to grow and develop. Having believed like Elena, that Damon is not as much of the bad guy as he makes himself out to be, this book helps to shed light on this instinct and investigate it further. With the appearence of two new evil and sinister characters set on destroying Fell's church, Damon's inner struggle with evil and good is played upon heavily in this book and it is not as simple as choosing a side...I welcomed the refreshing look on the evil bad boy Damon and his struggle with his feelings toward Elena too. Without spoiling anything, whether Damon feels for Elena is purely beacuse she is something he can not get or that she is his little brothers vs. that he may actaully want more than just her blood are brought to light and a sensitive side of Damon is shown but not without consequences.I would go as far as to say, that while the first two double installements were not really for adults, the shift to more adult matters in this book and hopefully the next allows it to be an adult book in my mind.I Loved it and could not put it down, I can not wait for The Return: Shadow Souls which is out out in May. I have mines pre ordered :).Cassandra220689

Excellent
The series on ITV2 called the "Vampire Diaries finished a couple of weeks ago, (sob sob), and I really enjoyed it. :-)The series was based on novels by L.J.Smith during the period it was on TV I decided to buy the first four novels in the series, as I know usually the novels that series are based on are even better, and I wasn't disappointed. :-)So when the fifth book was realised I couldn't wait to buy it, as soon as it arrived I started to read it.Elena sacrificed herself to save both Stefan and Damon but she was sent to a fate beyond death. But a very powerful supernatural force brought her back, now Elena is not just a normal human she has powers.Elena's human friends: Bonnie, Meredith and Matt grow suspicious of Caroline's strange behaviour whilst trying to support Stefan's efforts to help Elena.Stefan is lured away by an evil force ad Damon takes this chance to convince her that he's the one for her, but not everything is as it seems with Damon. There's a darkness that's now covering Fell's Church and a malevolent creature is hell bent on hunting Damon as he can help him to get the one thing he wants, Elena.Well, I don't want to say anymore about the story as I really don't want to spoil it for you.The author grips you right from the start; her characters and the story are extremely well written. It's a very enjoyable and compulsive read; I just couldn't put this book down. :-)If you're like me and you've been watching the TV series this is a must read. It's more involved and the story goes a little deeper into what's happened in the past. :-)Even though these books are classed as young adult books, anyone from 14 years onward will enjoy them. It's an excellent horror novel and worth every penny. :-)

Enjoyable, but still a little let down
Usually I thoroughly enjoy the Vampire Diaries books, but when I got to this one, I found it harder to read. I enjoyed the new character that Elena had become and even enjoyed Stefan's repeated comments of "Lovely Love" towards Elena, unlike some reviews I've read, it didn't actually phase me.I just can't quite put my finger on what it was about this book that I didn't like. I think it was mainly the characters we meet in this. I just disliked them immediately and found the story towards the end just seemed to stumble over itself to hit the finish line.It was such a shame, as I say, I'm usually hooked to these and can finish a VD book in a night, but this one took me quite some time to read as it just lost my interest.I'm trying not to say too much the exact things I had issues with, as I don't want to fill this with spoilers for other people.**SPOILER BELOW**Elena somehow learns about her new powers and these so called "wings", I just didn't follow how she suddenly knew how to use these powers. Maybe I missed something, but I took my time reading this as a result so, I don't think I did. It just wasn't for me unfortunately, really saddened by this but hoping book 6 wins me back over.

enjoyed but really repeatative
I watched the series before reading the books and I have to admit I enjoyed the series much more.although I'm now on book 7 I found this trilogy or series to be particularly repetitive and found myself becoming easily distracted, losing interest quickly and skim reading which is rare for me when reading. I feel as if too much attention is paid to unimportant details and just as you feel it's reaching something that's drawing you in it then begins explaining something that makes you lose all the thrill and excitedness that was built up.I'm still going to read every one of these books as I really really want to like them, I would recommend then but you just have to be prepared to be let down in some parts unfortunately!!!!
