The Gamification of Learning and Instruction: Game-based Methods and Strategies for Training and Education

I just wanted to understand gamification
I have read several books on gamification and found most touting the use of rewards and badges or the technical aspect of design. I never wanted to design a game; I just wanted to understand gamification. Dr. Karl Kapp delivered what I was looking for. A book that started with the basics (it's not about rewards, games and badges) at the very beginning giving me a true understanding of games and maybe more importantly gamers. He then proceeded to get into just enough technical detail so that I would be able to communicate and participate in the creation process with a designer. Many other books use examples such as frequent flyer programs and other reward schemes that have been used for decades. Dr. Kapp begins with the facts and why anyone wants to use gamification - Engagement! He goes on to create a learning experience that gives you the basic understanding for both an instructor trying to learn or create a game and the designer that is trying to understand how to construct a game. He marvelously constructs a bridge between the two disciplines. The construction of the book is excellent (I wish more authors would do it this way). He starts out the chapters with questions preparing you for the material ahead. He ends each chapter with key takeaways and I found myself using them as my reference pointers for additional material. His notes are also delivered at the end of chapter with many links provided (Kindle Version).Dr. Kapp's examples are current and readily applied to the real world. After reading the book, you feel that not only do you understand the gaming world better but you are much more willing to take a stab at trying a few games on your own. Something the author recommends that we all do if we are serious about gamification.I have already purchased two copies of the book, sending the hard copy to a client and a Kindle version to use as a reference tool no matter where I may be.

Inspirational read
As a frequent industry speaker on the topic of gamification in learning, I'm frequently asked about the definitive book on the topic. I'm glad I finally have an answer. Just as I find Kapp's previous book on 3D learning to be the definitive book in its' field, his new book is by far the best one in the red hot trend of gamification in learning. Kapp has put together a brilliant primer on how to gamify learning. It's packed with both useful examples and research rational for gamification. Kapp does a great job of challenging the industry to go beyond just adding points, levels and badges to the same boring eLearning and calling it gamification. Instead, he shows how cutting edge learning organizations are using gamification to reinvent learning, making learning engaging and relevant for a new generation of digital native learners. The book covers the rational for gamification, with a wealth of research, explains what it is, AND how to develop it. As a learning developer, I was particularly interested in the chapter about the gamification design process. I liked all the chapters by the contributing writers, who are leaders in their fields, particularly Alicia Sanchez's case study about casual games in the defense industry.I have always admired Karl Kapp's grasp of both academic research and professional implications of new learning trends. This book is both a great inspiration for learning professionals and an awesome introduction to students in the field.

Highly Recommended!
Reading the book “The Gamification of Learning and Instruction” was very enjoyable. What is the most interesting about the book is the way Karl Kapp uses examples of games from different generations to make his point. He mention games from Atari 2600 to recent game such as Red Dead Redemption on the Playstation 3. As a gamer since 1980, I felt like I was getting a reward every time a game that I’m familiar with in the past was mentioned.

Great book, but.....
This book opened my eyes to the serious side of gaming. I'll never look at my son the same as he plays Call of Duty for seemingly endless hours. I can see how and why he interacts with the game so skillfully. Thanks to the authors for providing this insight for a digital immigrant! However, the book is terribly written when one considers the myriad grammatical errors and sentence structure blunders. It makes for stilted reading, becoming quite an annoyance for anyone casually familiar with the English language. Sentence fragments; run-on sentences; subject-verb disagreement; this book has it all in great quantity! I contacted the publisher and was asked to provide a list of errors so they could update the online version. Having only read the first 32 pages at the time, I did not edit the whole book. Consequently and understandably, a fully edited version will not be available if and until the publisher provides a second edition. Until then, absorb all you can from the content. Then donate the text to your local school for use as an exercise in the fundamentals of grammar and composition.

Great Tool!
Not done yet, but so far I live it. I keep hearing, “Gamify your curriculum.” However, nobody shows me how. This book breaks it down for me. Worthy purchase for teachers and professors.

Helpful to Educators
Kapp uses research and a wide range of successful computer and video games to illustrate and teach the key components of gamification or how to use games in teaching. The book helps paint a picture of the active and prosperous current scene, but also gives useful advice to any teacher working on game design - whether in a traditional card or game board format or in a digital form. As Kapp notes, "Teachers need to get on this wave, or be left behind." Our students are already on it!

quite good ... a little boring sometimes
I'm a teacher, an engineer and a gamer. I'm currently working on something related to gamification of learning and I wanted professional advice and I've got it. I'm now starting the next book from this author, the one with examples.

Kind of a survey
Topical subject, and the author takes in a vast array of branches of using Games - especially for teaching and learning. However, it's a light read, and doesn't go into any theoretical details on why games are good learning tools. And it presents no statistics on the learning outcomes of using games in teaching and/or training. However it talks about both theory and statistics, but just in a peripheral way. This of course helps make the book easily readable, and entertaining. But it doesn't have any depth, just a lot of ideas thrown together without much interlacing.
