I learned calligraphy in middle school, some thirty four years ago,, life caught up with me and calligraphy was set aside. Lately I have had the overwhelming urge to re learn calligraphy. I have ordered all my supplies and I also ordered supplies to teach my nine year old granddaughter. She is absolutely fascinated!!! And she is picking up on it quite well. I am so thrilled to have found this book as well as a calligraphy book for children. This beautiful style of writing really should still be taught in school. And this book is absolutely great, in the way it shows you how to form your letters and gives you step by step instructions. I recommend it to anyone that wants to learn calligraphy, and it is really a great stress reducer!!!!

Really like this book. It does not have dozens of alphabets but what is does have is several commonly used scripts. In the introduction is great information about pens, paper, angle, nib widths etc. I took a calligraphy course years ago but did not practice.This intro really jumped started my work again as it acted like a refresher course. I believe a beginner could use this book. The best part of this book is it shows angle of pen and direction of each pen stroke to create the letter. Notes and tips on creating letters are there also. I have a couple other little books with scripts but this one is the best.

I chose a 4 star rating solely because I am not the person learning from this book. I bought it as a gift for my sister, who loves it. The book is smaller than I imagined it would be in my head, but actually the perfect size for taking with for some calligraphy practice out of the house. Beautiful gloss pages, spiral bound to lay flat on a drawing table, and to my cursory glances full of great info and projects.The reason I chose this particular book was the emphasis on both fundamentals as well as practical application. My sister loves classic etiquette, so being able to reference traditional styles and layout for invites, letters, dinners, etc., is an amazing resource for using the skills she is learning.

If you are beginning in calligraphy, this is the book I'd start with. It is done by the same publisher as the Calligrapher's Bible and the introductory section is essentially identical, but this book demonstrates how to draw all of the letters of a selection of alphabets. The Calligrapher's Bible provides more alphabets for reference, but limited drawing instructions.I got this and Modern Calligraphy, as well as Calligraphy for Dummies. It all seems to have provided a well-rounded basis for me to build upon.

For the past forty-five years I've done calligraphy. My grandfather had a SpeedBall Calligraphy Alphabet book. That, combined with an old pen and nib set got me started. While I don't practice it frequently enough to consider myself anything other than an amateur, I don't consider myself to be a beginner. Yet, this book is chock full of ideas, tips and approaches that I find very useful. If you don't buy any other Calligraphy book, spend your money on this reasonably priced gem!! I highly recommend this one.

Very detailed, and organized efficiently starting with the most basic of lessons.

This book is, by far, the best book termed for beginners. Written by two outstanding artists in the calligraphy world, it gives outstanding instruction and examples. The reason I purchased this book, after getting it from the library, was because it has so much information packed in a small book and most significantly all the specific tips and interline spacing suggestions. I like that it's spiral bound and can stay open on my slanted table.

Super-good, comprehensive calligraphy and illumination book by Mary Noble, professional artist for many years. I would love to own more of her books and have as many years to practice skills.

It is easy to understand. I suggest if you want to start.Begin with the basics.

カリグラフィーの初心者向けの教本です。沢山の書体が、ストロークの似た文字を集めて練習できるようになっています。英語なので、どうかなと思いましたが、イラストと写真で丁寧に書き方がのっています。１文字につき写真が３枚ついているので、だいたいの書き順もわかります。あと、すこし厚い本ですが、リングとじなので、見たいページがきちんと開いたまま練習できます。
