Q: My 2019 imac came with 8gb of ram can i add 32gb more of this ram?

Yes. You have four memory expansion slots. Two of yours have two 4 Gb sticks (for total of 8Gb). You can add these two 16Gb (32Gb) and the combo with the 8Gb you currently have your will end up with 40Gb total. I have two 32Gb and the original 8Gb that came with my 2019 iMac giving me a total of 72Gb. No problems or worries.

It worked on a 2019 iMac 27 inch which I purchased before the 2020 model came out. I don't know if the 2019 is the same as the 2017 model, but may be.

The memory on the M1 equipped mac is not upgradable.

I confirm I bought "A-Tech 128GB Max RAM Kit for 2019 iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch) - (4 x 32GB) DDR4 2666MHz PC4-21300 / PC4-21333 SODIMM Memory Upgrade Modules". I had no problems in booting or of other type. I suggest to check the memory installation. You can try to install them separately and test the machine with every single 32 GB module just to check them. Then install a couple of them (in the same bank). I hope you solve your problem. I read a lot of technical specifications and users' responses before buying those RAM: they are definitely supported. Bye
