Great tool for the garden shed
Works great in well watered soil. If you intend to reuse the cut sod, the sod should be well watered before cutting. Very convenient tool to have in the shed. Will easily handle small sod removal jobs. Large jobs too if you want the workout.

Quail Manual Sod Cutter
I found this product very difficult to use. You have to have a lot of strength to use it. The "blade" is not sharp. I would not buy this item again.

Takes some practice getting used to
I have been doing yard work every weekend it seems since the past 9 months. I purchased this because a) I was unable to rent a sod remover from the big box store as I do not own a truck or a trailer and b) I wanted to have something around that I could use on multiple occasions as I re-design the front and back landscape. I am 5'4 and I do find the handles a bit short, so I would imagine it would be even more awkward to manipulate for a taller person. I did follow another reviewer's suggestion to wet the sod before attempting to remove it, but the problem is that the green rolling mechanism then gets stuck with left over sod and you have to scrape it off every so often. I am not a weakling but this does take some energy to use. I am still not convinced it is better than a conventional shovel or spade in order to remove the sod, but at least you don't have to lean down so much.

Will not work on zoysia grass
This is one of the finest made tools I have ever almost owned. It is HEAVY DUTY and cuts under regular sod in an unbelievable way. Unfortunately I have zoysia grass in the areas I wanted to use it. The tool will cut through the heavy root system, but NOT in a way that one human can keep up for more than a few minutes. I tried to adjust the blade to cut under the sod, but I could see that the 1/2" of possible adjustment would not be deep enough for my lawn. The company immediately sent me an RA number and instructions to return it and my account was credited within a day of when it could possibly arrived back at the vendor.I am very sorry it did not work for me. If every tool I own was made like this one, I'd never have to buy another.

Great tool!
WowMom's review is spot on! I followed those directions to a tee and it's removing the sod at a rapid pace. Unfortunately, I'm having to battle tree roots, although I'm amazed at how well it is cutting through some of them. It rained yesterday, so the soil is nice and moist. I wouldn't bother otherwise, but then I've removed sod with a shovel on many occasions previously, so I know better than to try when the soil is dry. You will definitely work up a sweat, and this is not for woosies as another suggested. My ONLY complaint is that at 5'10" (I'm female by the way), I wish the handles were a tad longer. I have to bend over slightly, which I know is going to do a number on my back tomorrow. I'm finding that if I take it slower though (not "throwing" it quite as far each time) I can stand up straighter. I have been eyeing this tool since last year, because I am always removing sod it seems in various parts of my yard. Renting the machine kind just doesn't make much sense for us. I've heard those are a challenge to maneuver, I would need to "make a whole tiresome day of it", rather than working at my own pace over the course of a month or two (or year or two as my design ideas change), and I would need my husband's help (which he isn't always willing to give ;).Now, what to do with all the sod I've removed. Always a conundrum... Oh, and I got this within 2 wks - even though Amazon said it would take 3 to 4. Yay for me!

An amazing time and labor-saving device!
I like gardening on a grand scale, and this year I wanted to strip my entire front yard of grass and install a giant flower garden. I had been eyeing this tool, but 10 weeks ago I had rotator cuff surgery and my shoulder became frozen (painful and unable to move), so I didn't think I could remove the grass by myself. A contractor wanted to charge me $1,000 for his crew to remove the grass with shovels, so I took another look at this tool. I saw a YouTube video showing people using it, and read the Amazon reviews, and decided to give it a shot. I'm so glad I did.I attached pictures showing my front yard, which I stripped in less than a day and a half. Once you get used to the tool you'll be amazed how quickly you'll complete your task. The price may seem steep, but it's well worth the money. This was one of the best purchases I've ever made, and I look forward to many years of gardening with it.A few notes:1. This makes very neat lines, and is great for carving a section out of a patch of grass2. Try to avoid pushing the tool across a slope. Push it down the slope whenever possible - it's easier.3. Most of your force will come from kicking the tool, not pushing it. Give it a good, hard kick, then draw the tool back a few inches, then repeat. You'll quickly develop a rhythm for it.

This thing works great. I removed most of a 2X30 foot yard ...
This thing works great. I removed most of a 2X30 foot yard over the course of only a day...like a few hours in the morning and a few hour in the afternoon. I did resharpen the blade with my knife sharpener though. When I first started using it, it would get hung up on underground roots. I sharpened it for 20-30 minutes to razor sharp and then I kick it right through that underground nonsense. Now Its awesome!

Sod buster!
I really hesitated to buy this thing. I have rented the motorized sod cutters; they're about $50 a day here. But I find myself wanting to remove a little sod and make a bed, then next weekend do it again. So I figured maybe the $200 or so I would spend on this thing might be reasonable. It was! The thing cuts a lot easier than I expected. It is very sturdy, and quite manageable. I'm 56 years old and no longer in top shape, but I have no problems using this thing. I won't try to remove all the sod to pour a driveway, at least not all at once, but if you tend to work on small areas, say 5x10 feet, relatively frequently, this ends up being much more cost effective than renting a sod cutter, especially considering the hour it takes each way to pick it up and drop it back off. Oh, yeah, I'm generally cutting St Augustine grass.
