Art for All: Planning for Variability in the Visual Arts Classroom

This book is somewhat directed toward those with an initial understanding of what Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is, but has a lot to offer those of us who aren't currently using UDL as well. The book is much much more than a description of how to run a classroom. The author shares personal experiences and insights (both difficult moments and triumphs) from her background working with a full range of pre-high school students, many with challenges in their education. The crux of the approach presented is providing a variety of instruction and execution styles for students to work with. Encouragement and ideas for how to do this are well presented. The book treats students as individuals who engage in different ways and, rather than trying to suggest a best-fit approach, opens the door to efficiently giving every student a chance to find the path that best suits them. The burden is first with the instructor to provide at least a couple of constructive options, giving students the freedom to seek their own best fit. It's an enlightening view that I expect would encourage student engagement and real creativity.

This book will probably be of most interest to art teachers, but it is really a framework for how to teach any topic so that all your kids can succeed. Perhaps the most refreshing philosophy in this book is that the kids are our customers, and that you have to "sell" them on art (or whatever your topic is). Because frankly a large number of kids in any classroom would be somewhere else if they could. This book shows you how to give them multiple options for achieving any educational goal which will result in more of them wanting to be in class. A quick and fun read.

Easy read and very helpful when planning all-inclusive curriculum in art education. Not too expensive and packed with valuable information.

Art for All nicely breaks down the critical components of teaching visual arts to students at all levels. I'm not a UDL or visual arts expert and I found this easy to read with clear takeaways one can use for teaching and learning.

I'm not an expert in art education but found this book easy to follow and understand. I wish it was in color rather than black and white.

Lovely read - the book offered prompts to "stop and think" plus it offered options for integrating the ideas. I'm so glad my colleague told me about it!

This is a great resource for ideas on how to plan out a semester; I've needed something to inspire me to give my planning a re-think!
