Macroeconomics for Professionals: A Guide for Analysts and Those Who Need to Understand Them

This is a solid book with fine print and quality paper.The soft cover is as good as it can be.

This marvelous book is a guide to analyzing a country's economic reality through an IMF-style framework. Although surely useful for economists, I believe it is especially useful for students and for everyone who is trying to understand the four sectors of an economy and how they are connected to each other, such as journalists, analysts, and the general public. The IMF provides apprenticeships and training courses to its new economists; this book is for the rest of us who do not have access to formal IMF training.

I spent sixteen years as a fund manager in London and then took a mid-life university break. Re-entering the world of financial markets after six years, I needed to reeducate myself in macroeconomics: so much has changed, and so much that would have been considered impossible when I first began my career (at the time of Russia and LTCM) is now considered unremarkable. So, it is with the experience of the practitioner, and more recently a student, that I chose this book.It's an impressive piece of work, for it covers every required base and is comprehensive without being dense. Keeping such a volume to under 300 pages, and, importantly, ensuring a reasonable price (which it is), is a supreme achievement. Also, for this reader, who rejects overly mathematical and Greeks economic texts, it absolutely strikes the right balance of text-based exposition and econometric formulae.To the authors, I say 'Bravo!' and I wish them every success, for they'll surely deserve it. And to anyone considering purchasing this volume, I would encourage you to do so.

I have a Ph.D. in economics. So why did I buy this book? Because you don't learn the simple but important things in graduate school - news you can use, if you will. I am a researcher in the private sector who focuses on applied microeconomics. But the information I learned in graduate macroeconomic theory classes is not useful in that environment. This stuff is. If I spent my time with macroeconomists, well, that would be different. But I don't, and this book helps me to frame macroeconomic phenomena in an approachable and practical way, and it also has some useful insights.

I purchased this book back in mid-2019 but until now was able to fully read during the current Coronavirus lockdown the past 3 1/2 weeks, and I must say that I really enjoyed reading this book given the fact that I was able to read it without interruption. The vast expertise of both authors has produced a very well balanced approach, authoritative yet refreshing at the same time, at least for someone accustomed to a "standard" textbook approach. I recommend this book for both students and professionals, and I am sure all new readers will agree with my view despite some (very few) typos. Hopefully, the authors will consider soon publishing a version for the spanish speaking audience.

It is well written for all professionals in the field. The use for practical examples is great. It was written by economists who understand the field and want to share their knowledge. Great for training young economists.

Reasonable content but often conveyer in a convoluted manner. I am always bothered by typos and graph/figure mistakes. Page 8, figure 2.1 transposed the labels. Worrying to see it so early in the text and the mistakes (mostly benign) continued on.

Excellent guide on making sense of the numbers seen in the national accounts. I've read some macroeconomics textbook that are focused on theory but little emphasis on how non-economist analysts can gain insight from the statistical numbers. On the otherhand, I've also read macro books that are too simplified which tend to miss the complexity needed to build analytical thinking for macro analysis of national numbers. I'm using this book in conjunction with my research of the Philippines' national numbers, 2008 System of National Accounts and various sector reports. I haven't seen any other book that functions like this. This book is highly recommended to those who may want some grounding on practical macroeconomic analysis. If the authors publish a 2nd edition, I will definitely buy it.

If you have done basic macroeconomics, you can easily understand this book. If you have never done macroeconomics, you will find it hard to understand some of the concepts in this book. This book is written by those who have experience in the field. So it is practical and relevant to the issues we face every day.

I attended a 2-day workshop on macroeconomics analysis by the IMF for graduate students. We applied the IMF's keen programming tools and thinking process in analyzing the macroeconomic situation of a certain country. This book is the closest textbook that offers readers a similar experience, with more in-depth insights. It teaches you the application of macroeconomic theories, how to read official reports full of macroeconomic indicators, and abbreviated jargon. You can also easily obtain an online companion document that showcases how such knowledge on macroeconomics can be used in real-world situations.Although rigorous mathematical treatment is more preferable in macroeconomics, one cannot deny that for such an analysis to make sense to the policymakers, you need also good story-telling skills, which can be learned from this book.
