Q: Hooks for hanging - are they permanently attached to frame's border? If so, are there two different set of hooks for hanging in either direction?

There are several hooks so that it can be hung in either direction and with different hangers.

Q: Does it need to be nailed or can damage free strips that are removable be used?

Dear adriaticseaThe frame is about 5.6 lbs, it might be take a couple of the damage free strips to hold it up.As most of the strips seem to hold 4lbs.I hope that helps.
