This chess board is BEAUTIFUL. The weight is heavy and feels substantial when you hold it. This board is very large and takes up most of my coffee table space. The squares are the perfect size for larger chess and checkers pieces. thick and heavy as the description says. inlaid wood tho? idk about the playing field but the border doesnt seem to be. theres a chip on a corner (from me) and it seems to be a veneer and thats why i knocked 1 star. besides that for what i was looking for, an analysis board without a huge border that could fit on my desk where my 3" king set would fit perfectly, its perfect and sitting on top of a 10" swivel turntable, it makes analyzing from both sides easy. even if i wanted to play with friends its nothing to be ashamed of. high quality boards arent cheap and high quality boards with squares under 2" are pricey and rare.

I read a lot of reviews before landing on this chess board. I purchased it for my daughter's birthday, and she loves it. Truth be told, it's nice enough for me to leave sitting out in my living room. I appreciate that it is a solid wood board. I purchased another chess set on Amazon so that I had the weighted pieces that made complimented this board best. Everyone who comes over wants to play.

Really beautiful board and it looks great with our pieces. The wood is lovely, very nice color and seems to be well crafted. Ordered last minute and arrived in time for Father's Day. I know nothing about chess and how to purchase a board ( I should say I knew nothing, now I am obviously an expert) so I really appreciated other reviews that described how to order the correct size. So here goes my expert advice! My husband had very cool chess pieces that my daughter bought at a antiques store. I did not realize/know that they are "large" pieces, now I know that if you measure the height of the King and it is 4 inches that is large. The set fits this board really nicely. I freaked out a bit when this board came - thought it was too big. But once they set up the pieces, perfect!

Absolutely beautiful board. It's very well made and weighs about 6-7 lbs. I had ordered a chess set with a 4" king and this board is perfect. My husband does not care for chess, in general, but now that we have a classy set and a beautiful board, he actually asks me to play.The board is about 1/2'' thick and the finish is very smooth. You can see the graining and slight imperfections, just as in any piece of wood. Yes...it is a veneer....who cares? it's smooth, well made and beautiful. I will probably lean it up, on a shelf, when not in use. It will make a statement in any room.

Solid, well built, and beautiful! The base is solid hardwood, the same wood as the dark squares on the top. The wood grain comes out very nicely. This is a much higher quality board than many of the other you might find that use thin nice looking wood veneer on top of a cheaper low quality wood. This board is solid wood and well made! I was proud to give this as a gift to my nephew, and he loved it!
