Dragon Ball: Season 1

To think I got really into Dragon Ball Z when I was a teenager. It aired on Toonami on Cartoon Network, back when the network still had pizzazz. Then, they aired the original Dragon Ball, but I wasn't exactly hooked. Many years later, I finally see the latter anime from the very beginning. And this time, I am genuinely curious. This one touches on more values and morals, and life lessons than DBZ does. One of these lessons is in humility and having something to strive for. This lesson comes with the final match of the World Martial Arts Tournament. I am impressed. Also, now I know it is called Capsule Corp. I also now why the Red Ribbon outfit is despised in the Dragon Ball universe. Plus, I always associated the old Kamehameha wave with Goku, but Master Roshi is the true OG when it comes to that! It was also fun meeting little Goku, little Chichi, a younger Bulma, and a scar-less Yamcha...well, to a point. I mustn't forget Launch, another favorite character. Especially her sweeter half. Launch's other half would be a dang good fighter herself if she wasn't playing Annie Oakley. I will admit that the anime is a bit too daring in some areas, especially with the part of Goku. And not just him being unsure of boys and girls. Oh, and that goes for Roshi too. Still, in both cases, daring means "unhesistantly honest." Once the first season ended, I wanted to continue with the second. Then the third after that. Remember, folks, in order for DBZ and GT to make sense, know where it all begins. The original DRAGON BALL.

I was curious about Dragon Ball, so I caught a few episodes on YouTube and I enjoyed it so much that I had to buy the DVD set to continue watching. The YouTube quality for some episodes was good, but the DVD set is amazing. Others suggest that some of the individual set releases were better quality, but were edited. This set, from my understanding, contains the original unedited versions of the episodes. So, you see blood, brief nudity, etc.. And let me say that the video quality is amazing. I am watching it on a 65" HDTV and it resembles Blu-ray quality. I know some will balk, but unlike other animation sets I own, the lines are solid, with no noticeable jaggedness due to the upscaling of the SD quality to HD and the colors look vibrant. As usual, you will see some macroblocking with large areas of green or blue, in particular, but the set looks great overall. Best of all, the original 4:3 aspect ratio is intact, unlike what Funimation has done with DBZ. As for the packaging, I like it. There is a slipcover that matches the box art. If you remove it the spine of the box has a dragon image that you can combine with the other box sets to form a nice image of the dragon and the Dragon Ball logo on your shelf. The slipcover isn't necessary, but it is embossed, which is nice. All of the disks include the same art, which is applicable to the blue bricks, as they are called, for Dragon Ball, as well as the orange bricks from the Dragon Ball Z sets. Funimation, which produced the sets, stuck with a consistent design, which is commendable. Now, one of the complaints is that the blue bricks now lack the booklet, which includes character bios and episode synopsis. Apparently, Funimation decided to "go green" (i.e., save money) by not including them in the sets. However, you may download them in PDF form from their web site. It is a means to save money producing the sets, let's be honest. But, it is nice to be able to have them on my computer to view, so I don't mind. At least they aren't getting folded, torn, and just generally worn out. I will always have the digital version to reference if I like. For the price of these sets, you can't go wrong. You get hours of entertainment at a good price. The animation is beautiful and the show is a lot of fun. Funimation did a good job with these sets, although, the orange bricks are of lesser quality regarding the video, which is another story.

Its dragonball. No complaints

Dragon Ball Z, is a show that just sucked me in from the very first episode I ever saw. The intensity and amazing fights and very adult like premise just made me a fan instantaniously. I had always known that the show Dragon Ball existed, but it took such a long time for America to get it uncut not to mention getting the rest of the show. Funimation finally put the whole Dragon Ball saga into season box sets and affordable prices and of cousre like the first time around Dragon Ball is the last one to be released. Most of you know the whole Dragon Ball Z saga, but now we are taken back to a much smaller and simpler time in the world of the innocent, yet vallient Goku. Goku is just a boy living alone in the wild until one day a beautiful teenaged girl named Bulma ends up on his doorstep looking for something called Dragon Ball. Goku had no idea he had it nor did he have any idea what a girl was! Suddenly Goku's simple world is blown wide open and he joins Bulma on her mission to find all seven of the Dragon Balls. On their quest they meet many foes and also a few loyal friends and who knew what this simple mission would turn into years down the line. Maybe..Goku will finally figure out a few things about himself he never would have expected. This show is very different from Dragon Ball z. It such a delight to watch. It is filled with lots of laughs and a Dragon Ball Z fan will enjoy finally seeing where the story began and soon to come all the events that lead up to episode 1 of Dragon Ball Z. I think the part that the fans will like the most is just watching Goku and his friends grow up with each new adventure.

Im a big fan of all the Dragonball shows whch include Dragonball, Dragonball Z and Dragonball GT. Personally I own the Blue Dragonball brick sets, the Orange Dragonball Z Brick Sets, the Neon GT sets, the Gold Dragonbox sets which are not in print anymore, the Level sets on Blu Ray and several other releases. Im a bit disappointed that the entire Dragonball and Dragonball Z series isnt on Blu Ray but until that day comes this set is a fine release that surprised me with its quality. There is no disputing this collection like there is with Dragonball Z where people argue over which set is the best such as the orange brick, Dragon Box, Level set, or the newly released Blu Ray set. When it comes to the original Dragonball series this is the best and one of the only Dragonball releases and ill tell you why. 1st off the Blu Box collection shows the show in a remastered state, the image quality might not be on par with that of the Dragon Box set but it looks pretty good and for this price is a steal, the only way I would rebuy this is if there was a Blu Ray release because an aditional DVD release could nopt possibly increase the quality because its so good. 2nd Ive said before that im surprised at this quality release, the reason why I say that is the "remastered" release for the Dragonball Z or Orange Brick set are butchered, the original format for the video has been cropped heavily from a 4x3 to a 16x9 aspect ratio causing 20% of the image to be lost, some people dont mind but for its important to receive the original video, if prefer a cropped image then I will do so during my own playback. Since this is not altered in any way I highly recommend this set in terms of video quality. Lastly we have the video quality, the Japanese and English Dubs are both Present and the quality is pretty good in my opinion, I'm not a sound expert though so your free to make up your own mind here. In closing if you haven't bought any Dragonball or Dragonball Z DVDs yet then you must look no further as this is the definitive Dragonball release, I cannot say the same for Dragonball Z since each set has something different to offer, if anyone has any questions then feel free to ask me and ill do my best to help you, the questions can cover any of the Dragonball or Dragonball Z items in my collection as previously stated in my review

I actually started out as a Dragon Ball Z fan back when the series first aired in the US on Cartoon Network. Over last year, I bought all of the remastered Dragon Ball Z seasons as well as the Dragon Ball GT series. I was looking forward to seeing the original Dragon Ball series which deals with the earlier years of Goku, Krillin, Bulma, etc. I have to say that this first season of Dragon Ball was not disappointing. In fact, I think it is in many ways better than Dragon Ball Z. Why? Quite simply, this work is not only extremely funny, but you don't have to wait through episode after episode after episode (like in Dragon Ball Z) to see the ultimate outcome of something. The story moves at a very reasonable pace. Warning! There is a lot of sexual innuendo in Dragon Ball. Far more than in Dragon Ball Z. It's extremely hilarious but if you are bit prudish about this topic, don't buy this series. I love the interaction of Bulma with Goku. It is funny beyond belief. If you are a Manga, Anime fan as well as a Dragon Ball Z fan, buy Dragon Ball. By the way, unlike Dragon Ball Z, this remastered version isn't cut on the top and bottom of the screen to create the impression of wide screen. It's in the original screen format!

I'm a DB fan since 1991, watched the whole show from DB to Z to GT, and watchin KAI now. I started my collection of DB season now after Kai it's been released in Bluray, and loved the picture quality. I watch in a Sony 46" with PS3. I've been thinking about getting the rest of the series but I've been waiting for any Bluray release announcment. Which is not going to happen anytime soon. This DB season 1 went on sale for 21.99 here on amazon, so I decided to give a shot. I didnt buy any DVDs since I have my PS3. Only Blurays. I loved. The picture is great! I don't think can get better unless they do like they did with KAI, reshot every single screen. (That's not gonna happen) I did a compare with the bluray DB movies, which they use some programs to clean the picture, bla bla bla... I was stuned that THIS DVD looks better than that Bluray. OK, the mono sound in japanese is not the best, but it's ok for me. Actually bring back memories from when I watched on TV for the first time in Japan. If you are a picture crazy guy like me, you don't have to wait for a bluray release that may never come (took 20 years for a dvd release), you not going to be dissapointed with this DVD.

It's Dragon Ball so there is really nothing not to like. Simple as that. I'd recommend this to everyone everywhere.
