Great Product

I like this unit because I needed something to check voltage very quick.What I like?- Is very rugged and well made- Can work without batteries- Has a very useful torch- Show additional information like rotation (left or right)Why 4 stars?- I was specting a small unit, but this is very large, considering that is only for one purpose (check voltage)- Has auto range, but you may need some patience because it take a few second to get the final reading- The marks of the LED lights are small so it's difficult so see the voltage indicator, you need to wait for the LCD screen, that take some seconds to get the right reading, is not an quick voltage check at all.

So far this has been a really good meter. I did try the phase direction out and it required me to make sure I had my finger on the ground reference touch pad on the meter to read correctly but that is expected ( the little metal bump).I have it in my work tool belt and it comes in handy when working with some of the motors in the factory I was in. Overall it is a good meter.

I had the older model volt meter and it really did the job for me. The fact that it can tell me Phase Rotation Direction with two leads, blew me away... it works for only $25.00! So when I wanted to supply a family member with the basic hand tools to do their own electrical work, I gave them my old trusty unit and looked to buy another. The new model 18 replaced my old model 15 but there were four grades of the meter to chose from. The price difference between the lowest to the highest was not a lot of money so I got the highest version of the model 18, the 18D. What I liked was the LCD display and that it was back lit. Some of my work in under computer floors and the back lit display would make my life easier. What I did not pick up on was that the 18D was the only version that not show voltage readings with dead batteries. There is a convenient flashlight feature with all the versions and the button to turn on the light is way too easy to accidentally push and in a tool bag, things touch things and when I need the meter... its dead. Remember, the only version that will not read voltage with dead batteries? Bummer.I should have purchased the 18C, highest meter that will measure voltage with dead batteries. Still a great meter and the price was another great feature. I wish the lead was longer but I bought the older model 15 and will buy the 18C without a big to do. I will leave the 18D at home in a took box drawer. Phase rotation with two leads??? Co-workers can't believe it but it comes in handy.

Does the job.

The UT15C Unit does provide AC and DC voltage without having the batteries inserted. This is a nice option if you wish to store the tool when not in use without batteries inserted to avoid leakage issues. The tool is large and this can be both good and challenging depending on the size of your workspace. As with most tools you will want to keep the instructions handy. I wish the instructions were printed on a more durable material instead of ultra thin paper. If you do not plan to use it frequently, I suggest storing the tool in its original package with the instructions. The built-in work light is handy. I expect this tool will last and withstand the riggers of regular use.
