How to Write a Movie in 21 Days (Revised Edition): The Inner Movie Method

One of the best books I've seen on the movie industry. Even if you don't wish to write scripts this book will help you to understand movies and appreciate them.

Very useful. Would definitely recommend for any level screenplay writer.

The pitch was easy too small! The text was compressed into the center. It was much less a pleasure to read. So sad for me.Fortunately I was buying it to give to someone with younger eyes!

In this short (less than 200 pages) book, Viki King explores both a method for writing a movie and some of the basic issues that all writers must face from time to time. Although King is writing specifically about the movie business, her lessons are generally applicable to all types of writing. King addresses issues such as what to write, how to go about writing, and how to overcome obstacles.Writers are frequently faced with the challenge of how to write when the rest of the world is calling on us to do something else. King's suggestions on the `junk job,' writing with (or without) partners, and creating time and place to write are universals that are valuable to all types of writers. I also enjoyed some of her tricks--creating the whole book with blank paper and an end note, then filling in the rest as you went--to overcome writers block. Writers who want to explore screenwriting, or who just want to look at writing from a different slant will enjoy HOW TO WRITE A MOVIE IN 21 DAYS.Although I don't write screenplays, I re-read How to Write... occasionally just to remind myself of what I'm trying to do (write novels) and how to keep the priorities of my life straight. My wife, who does write screenplays, has adapted the Viki King approach to meet her needs--she finds that having her task for the day set out makes it a lot easier to get it done than if she was just given the formatting and plot and had to take it from there.If you've ever thought about writing a movie, or if you're a writer looking for a little inspiration, I highly recommend this book.

…because I give it away to others.It’s not the greatest book on the topic ever, but it hits some reminders when I have an idea in my head and need to unlock it.

The author's method and advice boils down to this:Write the script really fast, almost stream of consciousness "from your heart". Do it in a week. Take a day off. Now go back and spend a week rewriting "with your head".There -- that's the book boiled down to a paragraph. I just saved you the purchase price.If you're new to screenwriting, unfamiliar with the format, or how it's done, the author doesn't spend enough time explaining the basics the way the great Syd Field does in his books "Screenplay" and "The Screenwriter's Workbook".If you're somewhat advanced and looking for a little insider knowledge to give you an edge or to coach you in your writing process, the book is really too shallow and glib. You're exponentially better off with Blake Synder's "Save The Cat" or William Aiker's "Your Script Sucks!"Ms. King is more a cheerleader than a coach. She will make you feel good. She will give you a few mildly helpful tips when it comes to getting over writer's block. You may actually write a screenplay in 21 days using her method, and that may give you some satisfaction, but I bet it won't be very good. This is a gimmicky way to write a script.Indeed, this book reads as if Ms. King wrote it in 21 days. The writing is nowhere near as crisp and punchy as the writers of other books I've mentioned. The formatting, font, and physical printing of the book reeks of amateurism -- the same way a script written this way would reek.Here's my advice: read lots of screenplays, read Syd Field over and over and over again, read Blake Snyder and William Aiker. Read William Goldman's "Adventures in the Screentrade". Above all, AVOID Robert McKee's book.Then get your index cards out and get to work. It's you vs. your computer screen.

This book is FABULOUS!!! I LOVE it, I love Vicki King, I wish I could track her down and give her a big hug and kiss! A wonderful screenplay came just pouring out of me with this book ( I actually ordered the book because I had an idea for a movie and knew I would need help with the structuring of getting the story onto the page)... Not only is this book so well written, funny, compassionate, loving and witty but her description of where we're at based on age range and how that effects what type of story we're most likely to tell - well, it gave me some pretty big epiphanies and erased years of regret and feelings like I was late on getting a lot of things accomplished but according to Vicki, I'm right on time! Anyone who has even the slightest whisper of an inkling of a desire to "write a movie" GET THIS BOOK, you will never ever regret it.

If you're struggling with your script, this is a fantastic book to get something down on the page. Which can sometimes be the hardest part of the writing process. I gave my first copy to a friend, so I had to get another one for myself!

Das besondere an diesem Buch ist, dass es kein Buch ist, sondern zunaechst auch ein Motivationstrainer, der gleichzeitig Fachwissen preisgibt und auf den Leser uebertraegt. Das Fachwissen ist mehr als solide, da sich Viki King hat inspirieren lassen vom Urvater des Drehbuchs: Sid Field ...Das am allermeisten besondere: Man bekommt auch (nett gemeinten) Druck von aussen, was man als Autor normalerweise vermisst: Es werden Deadlines gestellt, Tag 1, Tag 2, ... und zuvor eine Vorbereitung in groben Handlungsschritten und Charakteren, die aber insgesamt nur ca. 3 Tage dauert. Und wenn man waehrenddessen eine Kreativblockade hat, was dank Viki Kings Worten und Uebungen eher unwahrscheinlich vorkommt, kann man immer noch einen Tag auslassen, dann weitermachen mit letztendlich 22 Tagen oder mehr - immer noch wenig.Das allerwichtigste: Weil es eben nicht nur strukturiertes Wissen ist, das Viki vermittelt, sondern direkt als Anleitung ausgelegt, braucht man sich selbst keine Anleitung zu schmieden (waere fuer einen Anfaenger vielleicht mangelhaft). Man muss nur befolgen, was sie sagt (selbst wenn man an ne bestimmte Sache nicht glaubt, trotzdem lieber ihr glauben und hinterher glaubt man, sie hatte recht!) und man hat Erfolg: Seinen Verstand und Herz setzt man ja zusaetzlich trotzdem ein, Viki bringt ihn nur in die richtige Form!In diesen 21 Tagen + 3 Tage Vorbereitungszeit hat man am Ende ein Drehbuch das so weit ist, dass man es schon auf den Markt loslassen kann! Und laut King und dem eigenen Verstand verbessert man es natuerlich noch mithilfe des Produzenten etc. ...Habe jahrelang ohne dieses Buch verharrt und wirklich: verharrt, denn habe viel experimentiert im Glauben ich kann es mir selbst am besten beibringen und nebenbei die Welt der Drehbuchautoren mit neuen Erkenntnissen bereichern. Fehlanzeige:Viki King - The Best!

Warum wird dieses Buch kaum noch rezensiert? Kennengelernt habe ich es durch eine Episode der TV-Serie The Sopranos, in der es der Figur Christopher wichtige Anregungen geben soll, um ganz, ganz Schneller Drehbuchautor zu werden - etwas das ihm gründlich misslingt. Und Skepsis ist angebracht, beim Versprechen innerhalb von 21 Tagen ein fertiges Drehbuch geschrieben zu haben - aber hilfreich und interessant ist dieses Buch allemal!Eine deutsche Übersetzung wäre überaus hilfreich! Gerade was die Fachbegriffe betrifft wäre es sinnvoll deutsche Entsprechungen zu lesen.Eigentliche Drehbuchseiten gibt es in diesem Lehr- und Motivationsbuch nur sehr wenige, aber dafür gibt es ja im Netz und anderswo genügend Material (kostenloses 1. Kapitel des Drehbuchs zu Inglourious Basterds etwa). Für mich ist die "Bibel" beim Drehbuchschreiben das Werk von David Chase: die Drehbücher von The Sopranos.  The Sopranos (SM): Selected Scripts from Three Seasons Viele von Viki Kings Ratschläge lassen sich verallgemeinern und als Motivationsbuch lesen, bei weitem nicht nur für das Schreiben nützlich.Das Konzept mit den 21 Tagen wird durchaus sehr genau genommen. Zu jeder Phase (Planung, Ideen sammeln, erster Entwurf, Korrektur) werden konkrete Aufgaben genannt. Zweifel werden aufgegriffen und Tipps gegeben, um sie zu bewältigen. Die Leser erhalten wichtige Anregungen, mit denen sie selbst überprüfen können, ob sie mit ihren Texten zufrieden sind, ob sie plausibel erscheinen und was eventuell noch übersehen wurde.Einen Kurs Kreatives Schreiben, ein Studium Germanistik oder auch einfach nur üben, üben, üben ersetzt dieses Buch sicher nicht, aber es ist eine überaus unterhaltsame, motivierende und interessante Lektüre! Danach wird man Filme und andere Medien mit anderen Augen sehen und mit deutlich mehr Selbstbewusstsein ans Schreiben herangehen! Der Rest ist, nicht Schweigen, sondern: Disziplin, Übung, Durchhaltevermögen, Selbstkritik und Ideen.
