Is it necessary to get 5'' one if I get 10'' one?

i want to contour my baseboard. can this go flush with the floor for vertical measurement?

Yes but if the gap is too big the baseboard might not look right. I had an instance and due to too big a gap I put the baseboard on as is and put a 3/4 by 1/4 strip at the bottom all around the room and it was flexable to push down to make up the gap and looked just like part of the base board.

Can they be connected together to make it longer if need be?

NO, they are individual of each other.

I need one to fit under a 1/2 inch gap between a door casing and floor. Will this?

These are 3/4 inch thick so it won't work but the cheap metal ones are less than 1/2 inch thick but they don't last long if you use them a lot. Harboe Freight sells them.
