Exactly What I Wanted
Update #2 for 3/31/2015:Somewhere between 50 and 60 hours of continuous operation at night, in shade, and in dappled sunlight, which was preceded by a 2 day unpowered charge in bright sunlight, the unit finally stopped operating. That's pretty good, I think.Update (3/31/2015):I've been running this aerator for 38 hours straight, following a 2-day, unpowered charge-up in full sunlight. It's been running without a hitch. The most sunlight that it has received since I turned it on has been shaded or, at the very best, dappled. It's still going strong.I took the back off my spare aerator, and I found that it contains a 10,000 mA-hr battery (roughly the size of a D-cell). In other words, if it dies, and if you have the right kind of battery charger, you can charge it back up without even needing sunlight. All you need to do is buy a spare battery. This thing is much better than I first thought. Five stars, definitely!Update (3/30/2015):I am currently running an informal "life test" on this to see just how long it lasts before being fully recharged in bright sunlight. So far, it has run for 30 straight hours and is still going. It ran overnight, and during the day has been in shade or, at most, dappled sunlight. It's performing much better than I expected! I plan to run it until it quits, or until I decide it won't quit, Either way, it's off to a very good start. If your fish tank or bowl is indoors or in shade, like mine, you might want to get two of these and trade them off: charging one while using the other. That way, you won't have to worry. If you're aerating a small outdoor pond in a place where you can put the pump's solar panel in direct light (the hose is about 3 feet long), I think you could probably just use the one. However, while the air output is great for a small tank, I don't know if it would be enough for a pond of a couple hundred gallons or more. (I mention this because they do call it a "Pond Oxygenator," and I don't know either the volumetric output (cubic feet per minute) of this pump, or the minimum oxygenation requirements of a pond or large fish tank.)---------------------------------------------The product description is a little confusing, but the one I received DOES have a battery (which is charged by the solar panel), so it will operate in the dark. I don't know for how long, or how long it would take to charge the battery back up if it was fully drained.I run mine intermittently in a wide-mouthed, 1-gallon Beta-fish bowl containing tadpoles. It provides very good, profuse, small-bubble aeration through a porous "stone" at the end of the air hose.I don't know how well it would work if you were using it for fish that required constant aeration of their water, though. I'm ordering one for a friend and another for a small, self-contained outdoor water lily "pond", so I may be able to do some more experimentation soon.

Almost a great winner, but dead within 48hrs,
I really don't like to give negative reviews, but this product has some challenges. When I first received this pump, I was concerned that it may be used. The airstone and pump were dirty, and I wasn't sure if the air intake on the front of the unit was supposed to appear the way it is. Also, the solar cover had white streaks that left me questioning if it would work. After some deliberation, I set the unit up. After turning it on, I was actually very pleased. It performed well enough for me to add three more units to my cart. Luckily, I did not purchase the extra units. After less than 48 hrs, the battery is 100% dead. If the slightest bit of shade passes by, the pump completely stops functioning. This is unfortunate as the unit is located in a wide open area on a second floor deck. It is exposed to intense, and full, sun all day long.I will say that if the unit had worked correctly, I would give it a 5 star rating and ordered many more units for my outdoor hydroponic setup.I made this purchase because the reviews indicated that, while nearly a roll of the dice, the odds of getting a good unit were slightly favored. I guess I am adding to the poor reviews to help give others make decisions from the reviews.

What a nice, well made product ! Quality shows in the very smooth finishes. About the size of a fat pack of cigarettes. Opens in half, allowing positioning of the solar panel, not just lying flat. Comes with a length of clear tubing and a small round air stone. The photos on here on Amazon are very helpful. Altho a nice note from the seller was included, no instructions were. Perhaps they were left out. A simple sketch of the oxygenator, labeling the parts and noting battery size would have been appreciated. Everything was pretty easy to figure out. On/off switch covered in black rubber and the outlet to attach tubing. But between these two is another tiny projertion also covered in black rubber. Haven't figured that one out yet. As soon as I depressed the on switch, it came on ! Surprise, should have had the little air stone in some water first. I have used this ONE little oxygenator for 2 ponds. I bought a little plastic spliter and more tubing and another air stone. One pond is 21 gallons, the other is 40 gallons, both with guppies and water liliies. The fish seem to enjoy playing in the bubbles. It has been 2 weeks since I received it. Runs even in low light and on cloudy days. It has even been running in the rain, which we have had a lot of lately. There have been times when it ran out of power, but as soon as the sun was available again, it recharged very quickly, probably less than an hour. My satisfaction with this cute little hard working thing has led me to order another one. If the new one includes instructions, I will return here and mention it. You can still order one with confidence, it is a good product at a very reasonable price.
