Modular, Low Cost Drone \w WiFi Camera; Great For first Timers
The media could not be loaded. I got this drone as a birthday present for a family member. It was very well received and has led to a lot of fun. It’s great for children and first-time drone users.Pros:Fully Modular parts; You can order replacement parts for anything and everything on the drone. Including new engines for the propellers, new wing guards, or any of the plastic peace that form the body. This is great if you buy multiples as you can trade, and salvage parts as needed. It’s also great for a first-time drone as you can repair any damage caused by careless flying.Easy to Use: I was able to fly it reasonably well on the first try. This is the first time I’ve used a drone, so I can’t compare it to others, but the control felt nice. I only wish it had a button to lock the altitude, but only costly drones seem to have this feature.Price; I looked at several drones on amazon before buying this one. My budge was $50. I think this drone offers the most out of the low budge drones. It’s great for first timers who don’t want to risk losing an expense drone in a tree.Camera; My main criteria for purchasing a drone was that it must have a camera. I think it adds a lot of fun for kids when they can see from the drone’s point of view. This drone offers that by having the drone create a Wi-Fi network that you can connect to from your phone. Using a free app, you can then get a live-view from the drone and it can record video and take screenshots from the live stream. I've attached video from some of our early flies, aka short lived flights. Looks like the video it takes is 640 x 480 in resolution with a frame rate of 15 fps.Automatic Flips! It has a 3D mode that allows the drone to do flips in the air. I didn’t try using this for a while as it seemed like an advance feature. However, it turns out that you just hit the 3D mode button on the back of the control and a direction; the drone will automatically do a perfect flip for you. It’s impressive and it makes you look like an expert.3D Printing Potential; If you know how to do some basic 3D model and own a 3D printer, you could easily 3D print replacement parts for this model. I have yet to try this, but as long as the weight distribution remain even it should work. You might have to experiment with different materials.Cons:No altitude lock function. The Wi-Fi camera’s frames per second varies a lot. Mostly when something chaotic is happening like a flip or a sudden crash to the ground.Camera would be better if it was facing forward more, rather than down. You might be able to adjust this manually.Story Time:I am ok at flying the drone, but not everyone in my family is. On one windy day, we ended up losing track of the drone in the sky as it went over the houses roof. To avoid it landing of the roof we set the controller to full throttle; max upward-ness. It went flying into the sky! It was a dot by the time we got around the house. To make matters worse, it was getting blown far away by the wind. We lost video from the phone app, and shortly after lost control of the drone. Interestingly, the phone still had the last frame it received from the drone stuck on the screen. It showed a car and a manhole cover as shown from above. Using this we found were the drone was flying as it went out of range. It was about 2 blocks away. In the same area, we found 3 wing guards on the ground, suggesting that it crashed though a tree nearby. We finally found the drone in a nearby field. It had flown about 3 blocks away. All things considered, it was a ton of fun being detectives looking for the drone. Pieces scattered on the ground, looking in the last seen area, the mysterious picture of a vehicle from above.

Great first buy for me
This is my first quadcopter. The construction feels reasonable for the weight of the vehicle with no cracks or stress marks even after a few crashes. I have been flying with the propguards and camera module attached at the lowest settings and it is maneuverable enough to fly inside or through trees. The software for the camera is a little clunky but it is not missing any features I can think of. The camera gets picture quality (estimation) of about 360P with 6-10 FPS. Too difficult for me to fly with FPV but someone with even a little more experience could do it. The camera software will record and do 3D rendering. I used Google Cardboard and a baseball cap to make a VR headset to fly my dad around some redwood trees at about 80 meters. He was having a great time so it's functional for sure. The flight time varies between 9 and 10 minutes depending on what I have installed. I think the battery might be a little too weak. That being said, the battery compartment is long enough to install a larger battery (maybe, I don't know how quad batteries spec out) and the connected for the battery is a small rectangular, 2 pin piece that even I have extras of lying around. The only negatives are the short flight time (probably fixable) and the headless mode. About headless mode, I am not sure if I just don't understand how it works in theory or if it is just a more difficult mode to learn but this little guy gets squirrelly. For an experienced operator, this is more likely a boon than a bust. The manual is translated to English and it is funny to read but everything is clear enough to understand and get full use out of the machine.

Challenging for a total rookie...but fun.
Frustrating first drone experience. It took so long for the controller to pair with the drone that I only got to fly about 3 minutes before it crashed and that was that.Second...I'm glad I bought extra batteries that came with a charger. The connections are tiny. I have big, thick hands and my fine motor skills aren't what they used to be (I'm 62). The instructions say "charge the battery first" so I did that. The red light on the charger cable (the red light is at the usb end) went out pretty quickly (30 minutes or so). I went to separate the battery from the charger cable and, whoopsy, out comes the wire from the connection that the battery plugs into. Great...so within 30 minutes I have destroyed the charging cable...and I thought I was being gentle. At this point I decided that I would never charge a battery while it was in the drone. Take the whole damn battery out, replace it or charge it, plug it into the drone connector cable, then put the battery in the drone.Third: The manual is pretty tough to follow along. The Chinese need to hire someone that can write clear concise instructions. They reek, and thats putting it mildly. The instructions, as someone else succinctly put it...will not get you from point A to point B.The manual does not tell you to move the left controller (the one that isn't spring loaded which controls propeller speed) to force pairing. Even doing that it still took over 5 minutes to pair the controller to the drone. All the blinking lights are confusing to a new user because they are codes. The signal that indicates it isn't paired is...two blinks....about 3 to 5 seonds...two blinks. When it is finally paired, the blinking green light on the controller will be solid. All I can say is....be patient...and when you no longer see the red light on the green/yellow/red light bar projected onto your working surface (its about 1" long and ½" wide), turn off the drone, wait 5 seconds and turn it on again. I had to to do this a few times. It was frustrating so be prepared.Assembly: This is actually really easy but, the screws are really really tiny. I saw that and immediately moved my work surface from my desk to the kitchen counter and worked on a couple of white napkins. I suspect I dropped the screws about 10 different times. The napkins keep them from rolling to far. I have a tiny motorized hobby screwdriver that I got from Lowes. It was invaluable. I didn't have to use the screwdriver that came with the kit. The prop guards go on super easy (I used mini needlenose pliers to position stuff) and so do the landing struts. I put a drop of Super Glue on each strut attachment point. So far so good.Pairing the camera: Took about 5 minutes and the instructions are easily understood...but read 'em two or three times anyway. Timing is critical. The camera will only pair with your phone when the red portion of the light bar I previously mentioned is flashing. Also, when the MJX C4005 FPV shows on your phones WiFi networks list ...press it real quick. I waited a few seconds and my phone started defaulting back to my home network and I had to start all over. Anyway, I got it working and the little camera is surprisingly good. I'm pretty happy with it. Neighbors dog might not be.Flight:...Ahhhh finally. I am a total rookie. My first goal was to get the little beast to hover. Heh....I put it on the patio table and gradually engaged power...Holy Cow. My American gradual and their Chinese gradual are two different things. The little thing leaped twenty feet into the air and took off over my lawn. I instantly let go of everything...it crashed. It was fine. My grass is also nice and thick. Now I get "gradual". Took it back to the table and just barely touched the throttle. I then adjusted the trim switches (in this regard manual is accurate) until I could get it to hover a few inches above the table. Conclusions: It's a fun little thing but the learning curve is pretty steep. I believe it will be an excellent learning tool for an adult who wants to take up drones as a hobby.UPDATE: 8/25/2016. OK, I broke it on the second day of use. One of the prop guards broke. Didn't effect flight. Pretty easy fix and I'm up and flying again. I was contacted by OXA USA COM who is an Amazon retailer for this little guy. I have to admit that US retailers and customer service folks could learn a hell of a lot from these folks. They sent me batteries, rotors, rotor guards and a new engine...oh and a cable. Not only that but they over nighted it to me. I think these folks know what is going to break and have kits prepared for distribution. So...Alice (lol)...Thank You. Based on customer service alone I would change this to a 5 star rating. But now that I have the stuff, and an electric hobby screwdriver for those tiny screws, I'm happily playing with my drone again. Thank You so much. Rating changed to 5 stars.

I've really enjoyed the MJX X400W so far
Since purchasing the drone only a few days ago, I've really enjoyed the MJX X400W so far. I bought it as my first (entry-level) drone, and the headless mode was helpful for me to learn how to fly. After a few tries, I turned off headless mode and got the hang of flying it pretty easily. The trim function is really useful too - as soon as I got the drone, I let it hover inside the house (where there is no wind) to set the trim properly. Once I took it outside, it was really windy and so the wind sort of blew it away - in fact I crashed at a reasonably high speed into a tree branch. However, there were no signs of damage or even any marks and it flew perfectly fine after. I would recommend using the propeller guards especially when you are learning how to fly the X400. They are easy to install and they extend the life of the props significantly. The camera has just less than half a second of latency but the image is reasonably clear and smooth. Although the video quality isn't excellent, it is useful as a tool to practice flying from a first-person point of view using the free downloadable app.One improvement that could be made lies in the quality and depth of the manual. I had difficulty getting the drone to fly when I first got it because the manual was unclear. However, I shortly figured it out myself because it is very simple: once the drone and transmitter are both on, and the drone is on a flat surface, you need to move the left stick from the down position, to the up position, and back down to the bottom position. This finishes the connecting/calibrating process between the drone and the remote, and the drone is ready to fly.The drone is much more durable than I originally expected when I purchased it. I am the type of person who is typically very careful with new things, but I have hard several hard crashes with no issues. I think the advertised battery life and charging times were 8 minutes and 70 minutes respectively, and although I timed neither of them, those times seem to be accurate. I would recommend purchasing a few extra batteries so that if you go to a park to fly it, for example, you have more than just 8 minutes of flying time.I haven't tried any other drones in this price range before; however, I don't see any major problems or concerns with it and I am very happy with my purchase. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to get a "trainer" drone to practice flying, especially if you have the intent to move on to a better drone in the future but don't want to worry about crashing it all the time.

You're never too old to have fun!
This is my first drone, I received it yesterday. Assembly was a piece of cake, camera was already mounted. I downloaded the camera app ( MJX H ) to my android phone, works perfect. I crashed it really bad in our cedar hedge(about 20 feet high) when learning how to fly it. (The LEDs help a lot in trying to find it's location) It was stuck in there, so I just kept trying to maneuver it out, and I eventually got it out. ZERO damage!! This thing is really tough, takes a crash and keeps going. I am getting better at piloting this thing now. It is a ton of fun and surprisingly well made for a lower cost drone. Go easy on the throttle as this drone can climb very quickly. Wish the battery had a longer flight time. I ordered the six pack of batteries for it from Amazon also. Link here: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01N74TTW6/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_4This is a fun drone and worth the price. Very happy with my purchase!

Fun little Quad - would definitely buy again! (edit: THIS DRONE IS INDESTRUCTIBLE !!!!)
I like the quadrocopter and must admit that it is my first quad. I've been playing with this thing every day (am not a kid) to learn how to fly it and I have a few things to note. It's not super steady so you have to be really gentle in your movements with the remote. Don't fly it in the wind - you'll probably lose it. Also re: movement, a rotation to the left is pretty smooth but if you do a quick rotation to the right it seems to lose power right after and drop a few feet so you need to increase the throttle fast. Also, re: batteries - the original battery that comes with it is great and delivers smooth strong power, but the 4 pack of extra batteries that you can buy (I did buy them) and kinda crappy, and the power is inconsistent. I noticed a real difference in performance with the Quad when using those batteries vs the 1 battery it comes with. I wish the extra 4 pack were the exact same ones as what sells with the Quad. Other than that it's a lot of fun, it takes quite a beating and is solid - nothing broken and still works fine. I would buy this one again - for that price you can't go wrong!**EDIT 2018.04.27:UPDATE - I lost this drone in the Canadian wilderness, in a mountainous region, while flying it too high and too far. It spend 2 months lost, outside, in the Canadian winter - which is harsh! This drone sat outside in temperatures of -10C to -20C continuously, was at one point submerged under 0.5M of snow for a month, and then submerged under water for 1month as the snow melted. I found the drone 5 days ago, have stored it inside to dry. I installed a freshly charged up batter just now and to my amazement it works!! The drone flies perfectly and is still stable!!! WOW!! THIS DRONE IS INDESTRUCTIBLE !!!!

Don't buy - Keeps flying backwards
Got it in the mail yester But very disappointed with it. The blades dont turn at the same rate so it doesn't hover and keeps flying backwards. Tries to compensate by going forward but goes sideways. I am returning this product. I would recommend not buying.

DBPOWER MJX X400W DRONE REVIEW
I've had a number of drones, 1st time from this company, controls were not as smooth as others...very twitchy in fact.Update since initial review submitted March 1, 2018: Company rep has followed up numerous times with emails to have me accept a new drone or get a refund and to modify or remove my review of this particular drone. I had already received a refund so didnt need same.Several emails later over 5 months and we get to September 2018. Rep this time offers up a free drone for me to test and adds, it would help to keep her job secure if I would modify or delete my review of this product. Integrity of my submitted reviews are more important to me though. Anyways, I said to send the free drone and I would retest and review drone in case initial one was a lemon in the group. I recieved the new (free) drone couple days later and was surprised that it was a completely different model than one I tested. Drone sent was the DROCON CYCLONE X708W. I tested this drone and it flies and operates very well and will be great for newbies to the field. I would recommend this drone (X708W)!!PS: I WILL SCREENSHOT MY COMMENTS IN CASE THEY GET EDITTED. CHEERS and Happy Flying!!
