Are these made of plastic or foam?

They are made of plastic. They are also small. The small squares are 1 cm X 1cm. The rectangles are 1cm X 5cm and the big squares are 5cm X 5cm. Each individual set only contains 4 of the large squares so you may want to combine two or more individual sets in order to have enough pieces for your problems.

How many of each piece in a set? Some people are saying there are xy pieces, others say no. (I don't see them in the picture.)

Thank you for your inquiry. There are 30 student sets and 1 translucent teacher set. Each student set contains the following pieces: 4 (x^2), 8 (x) and 20 (1). It does not include xy pieces. I also have 18 additional unopened student sets and an additional unopened teacher set if you are interested in more than 30 sets. Let me know if you have additional questions.

Does each student set come in an individual ziplock bag?

No; the student sets are bagged individually but not in reusable ziploc bags. I had to transfer them to ziplocs that I purchased.

Do the pieces exactly line up? I mean is there a whole number of x tiles that are equal to the x squared tile?
