Concise understanding and functionality of statistics
This is a very concise review of how to correctly pick a statistics test and actually perform one with SPSS. Especially practical for those in the field of medicine.

very good concise overview for researchers in medical science
For any healthcare staff (doctors, nurses, physios, dentists etc) this book is quite invaluable. It assumes some very basic knowledge of statistics eg the level at Stats for Dummies so it wont teach you stats. It also doesn't have formulae. What is does do, is explain quite a bit about how to devise, and conduct a preliminary analysis on data. Many stats books detail the concepts using statistical packages eg Andy Field's book is good, but this book puts into context medical data and analysis using SPSS and has a stepwise approach from data collection to analysis. It cannot replace a Statistician but for those healthcare workers who do not understand what to do next, once their data has been collected, this is a good book. There are logical chapters with explanations about correlation, regression, variance etc, when these are pertinent, also why these are pertinent and what these techniques mean with respect to medical data.I also found the tips on how to appraise the stats of papers to be useful since one of the points about research is how your data will answer questions different (or similar) to those in the published literature. Particularly useful to know how to do this when reading the literature and writing a discussion around the results and also in a viva voce when asked about how the published literature differs from the research results.Do not get if you are looking for a formal book on statistics in general or if you are training to be a statistician. It may not be relevant if you are mostly researching psychology but it could help with conecpts. Do get if you are beginning a medical related research project for the first time and have no idea how to go about analysing your data.
