Are these new encounter cards completely different from the ones available in the kickstarter and promo packs? I want to avoid paying for overlap.

Yes, they are completly different. Some art is the same from mission cards, but the options are completly new and were written by fans.

Does this expansion add anything/better for the automa version?

Just encounter cards. Like others encounter cards, you can used against the Automa. But the Automa doesn't use encounter cards itself.
