Q: The cajon came with strings taped down and velcro exposed. Is the tape supposed to stay on or come off?

Yes you can remove them for a more pronounced snare sound. The tapes are there to suppress the snare.

Q: Does it come assembled?

Yes. It came fully assembled and included the correct size allen key.

Q: can you sit on it? (175lbs.)

Yes. I gave it to my nephew, who isn't quite (175lbs) but he had no trouble sitting on it. It seemed like very good quality product (from what I could tell).
