Is the child able to put it together before it works?

Our 9-year-old son made a valiant attempt at assembling this, and the task kept him excited and engaged for quite awhile. Excitement turned to tears, unfortunately, when we found that it didn't work. No amount of adult help could make the thing work, even taking it apart and reassembling it.
