No, it does not work with my UV5RE, but does work with the UV-2501.

My radio doesn't do anything when I plug the cable in.

Your radio will do nothing when you plug it in. You need to use chirp to communicate with the radio. You have to have Chirp installed. Go to chirp.danplanet.com and download the latest version. When you plug the cable into the computer it will choose a I/O port. You need to go to your control panel and find out what port it connected to. Chirp will need to be given the port to communicate with the radio. Then you have to use Chirp to download the current configuration, modify the configuration and upload it to the radio. There are several youtube clips which give step by step instructions.

I have not heard this but I doubt it.

I had two data cables for programming my GMRS radios, but they didn't work on my new BTECH radio. So I purchased this cable that was suggested for the radio. To be honest I didn't think this cable would work either. All these data cables are the same, right ??Received cable and it was good quality and easy to install. Good secure fit that was compatible with my base radio. I was happy to see that the computer program recognized the radio right away. Ten minutes later my radio was programmed to my needs. Yes I was doubtful, but happy to be proven wrong. Truly good value for the money. On to the next project.
