You Never Know: A Memoir

An engaging, instructional bio devoid of "kiss-and-tell" and dark side anecdotes that seem commonplace in celebrity tomes these days. Tales of the inner workings of the film industry, recounting seasons shooting "Magnum," and Selleck's recollections perks of stardom perks are fun and entertaining. What speaks to me more, however, is Selleck's transparency about the pyschology of an actor's psyche. For an actor, there is wonderful insight and empathy from admissions of paranoia on auditions, self-doubt after being hired, intimidation being on set with stars. Those sections alone ought be spunoff into a primer for performer's in or wanting to get into the business. A thank you. Personal transparency, given an option I'd go 4.5 because, as a writer, I'm persnickety. There are a few too many details on some "Magnum" seasons, some predictable scenarios, repeatedly phraseologies, and the "Blue Bloods" series is shortchanged. But these are quibbles. It's a good book, easy to read with lots of mysteries and exciting moments. Much worth the time.

I loved this book very much. As I read it, it seemed as if Mr. Selleck was telling a story. It was so touching and very interesting. One of those books that you don't want to put down. I have always loved Mr. Selleck's personality. He is a very down to earth kind of man. I admire him a lot. And I have watched all his shows, including " Blue Bloods." So needless to say, this book is very worth while reading. He is a celebrity with no arrogance. Yet, his endurance and perseverance has showed through out his life. But it mainly shows his determination of learning his craft. Great actor! One of the best memoirs I have read. Can't wait for Blue Bloods season to start.

I bought this thinking it might be like James Garner's memoir, a favorite of mine, balanced tales from work, private life and keeping things balanced in his memories. Tom is very private like Garner, but more so. I was hoping for more balance. I never heard the gossip with his first wife, so comments on that were lost on me but he kept that brief which is good. Jillie, his wife, he mentioned meeting her and the wedding but never when she was pregnant or how being a dad changed him. I found myself reading about his daughter outside of the book. Lovely young lady. He is heavily detailed on movies and episodes and kind to mostly everyone he mentions. He's a class act that way but I can't say other than being curious about some episodes I forgot, I knew him better. There is a LOT of Magnum trivia for fans and some Blue Bloods and I don't regret buying it, but didn't have the same feeling as I did finishing others.

Really enjoyed this read. A real man’s man. He knows how to bring the smiles yet his writing and life story is told with such sincerity, he feels like your favorite uncle.

An excellent read from a great actor. Tom clearly takes his craft seriously, without taking himself too seriously. A fun read!

I grew up watching Magnum and all the great movies Tom Selleck made. I love his honesty and humanness in this book when it comes to his self doubt and humility as an actor. I can relate--being an actor and artist myself. Such an enjoyable read. Well written. I could hardly wait to pick it up everyday. It uplifted me. Thank you Tom!

Despite not being a big fan of Magnum (Don't dare say Magnum PI) I've always admired the work of Tom Selleck. Unfortunately, this "Memoir" focuses primarily on the television show that was his big break. I dare say that his career after Magnum is just as substantial and interesting and deserving of discussion. I was really hoping to learn about his westerns and movie experiences. To his credit, Mr. Selleck doesn't dish any dirt about those he worked with along the way. His story is interesting and once again shows how being in the right place at the right time can change your life. Although some might say he luckily stumbled into a life in Hollywood, I would say that a yeoman work ethic was what made the most of his opportunities. I still admire the man, although I wish he didn't push those reverse mortgages in commercials. He seems like a standup guy and devoted family man. Perhaps he will write another volume some day covering the rest of his life and career.

Selleck will sein Privatleben privat halten. Ok, aber dann versucht er eine Biographie zu verkaufen ohne über sein Leben zu erzählen - und versagt. Die erste Hälfte der langatmigen 300 Seite sind vorbei, bis Selleck beginnt überhaupt etwas über die Magnum-Zeit zu schreiben. Davor werden Nebensächlichkeiten aus seiner Laufbahn in überbordenden Detail aufgezählt. Danach gibt es praktisch nichts zur FRIENDS-Serie und auch zu BLUE BLOODS bleibt es knapp, obwohl diese deutlich länger lief. Das Buch ist so trocken wie das Papier auf dem es gedruckt ist. Ein paar wenige Fotos ändern daran nichts. Wer nur ein bisschen im Internet gestöbert hat, findet hier nichts Neues. Seine Tochter wird in wenigen Sätzen erwähnt, sein adoptierter Sohn mit wenig mehr. Zum Leben von Selleck findet sich kaum etwas. Zur Ehe mit Ray ist der halbe Text eine Erklärung dass er nichts dazu schreiben will. Zum Vergleich ist das amateurhaft im Selbstdruck hergestellte ALOHA MAGNUM von Larry Manetti ein Füllbrunnen an lebendigen, interessanten und persönlichen Informationen und Einblicken in die Zeit um Magnum und den Hauptdarstellern. Ich habe viele Biographien von Moore, Caine, McQueen, Garner, Jürgens etc gelesen. Dieses Buch hier ist selbst für eingefleischte MAGNUM-Fans weder das Geld noch die Zeit wert. Ich frage mich, was die Motivation für Selleck war, das Buch zu schreiben. Ob wie im Buch angedeutet das Geld langsam nicht mehr reicht für die Ranch und die Pferde seiner Tochter? Er nimmt für sich in Anspruch, hohe moralische Ansprüche an sich zu haben. Dieses Buch als Biographie zu verkaufen ist kein "fair deal", sondern eher eine Irreführung. Frei nach Shakespeare: Viel Lärm um nichts.

Lots if insight, fun and easy to read. Love it!!!

A very refreshing book. Tom Selleck will always be Magnum to me. Even though I was too young to watch the series or remember a single episode fully, everything I have seen him in over the decades, my first thought is always it Magnum. If you are looking for a tell-all, name, and shame story, this is definitely not the book for you. I say this book is refreshing because it is almost universally accepted how toxic and cut throat the film industry is. Here Tom shows another perspective the camaraderie between actors coming up, the joy and excitement of creating great movies or tv series. These experiences might be coloured by Tom's humble personality, thinking the best of people or his mindset to always make the best of every situation he is in. This makes Tom Selleck an extremely likeable person. Yes, serendipity and luck had a hand in his success, but he is the one who "layed the bricks," learned his craft, and did his best in the situations. Tom keeps his personal life (and army career) very close to his chest. He hardly talks about these except key milestones. He does give full credit to all the people he worked with and met over the years. One thing that made me lose a lot of respect for another actor was in their autobiography. They wrote a chapter where a veteran actor (who they name) saved their life by getting stuntman to do a stunt before them, the stuntman that dies his their place is not named. The fact that Tom did name people who took bumps for him or (indirectly) pait the ultimate price for him is a great show of humanity. This book spans from Tom's serendipitous start in acting to the final season of Magnum. His post work after that is done in a chapter of him looking back. This is an excellent book, of a good person, but also sees good in others, but is not afraid to stand his ground.
