Q: Does only the front grill get to hot to touch or the entire unit? Thanks.

It's 220 watt heater, if you want to touch it on the front where the heat comes from , expect to get burned.The electric and building codes in my state say have 12" away from combustibles on all sides including ceilings if the unit is suspended. I have 2 of these heaters in my wood shop and have never had a heat related burn or problem in12 years. They won't burn you unless you're made of paper!!

Q: Can the cord be replaced with a longer cord? I would like to have an 8 to 10 foot cord.

The six foot cord comes with a 220v male connector on one end and the other end with three wires is internally connected inside the heater. The 220v cord has three wires a white wire and the black wire connect to a terminal block inside the heater and the green wire goes to chassis ground. The only way that I would add a few more feet to this heater would be to open the unit up and disconnect the existing 6 foot cord and install a longer cord with the same gauge wire and the correct ends. I would not recommend plugging this to an 220v extension cord. Opening the unit up and replacing the cord may also void the warranty.
