It's battery operated, and has an auxiliary, external battery pack in case the batteries in the safe were to completely discharge. There is also a backup key to open the safe regardless of the battery status. Hope this helps.

No it doesn't come with cards. You can use any card as long as it has a magnetic strip. There's no need to program anything.
