Yes it has backer board. It is firm on the backside and cushioned on top. Very well made.

what is cross-fitting

Cross Fit is a face paced work out that works multiple areas of the body through targetrd work outs I.e. abs, thighs, calves, upper body. Pretty intense but only about 30-40 minutes needed

is this really hard because i need to be able to press into it? and it not give?

It is medium to firm. Not hard. It has a little give to it.
