Not merely a good lens; a game changer!
The one lens that's been missing in my camera bag until now has been a good wide-angle. This is not merely a "good" wide angle; it is no less than a game changing lens, simply superlative in sharpness, color rendition, contrast and distortion control. Buy it! You will only wonder how you did without it for so long. As a semi-pro landscape and wildlife photographer, this is the lens that is going to be on my camera (a Nikon D7100) most of the time. It replaces for me the 18-55mm kit lens that came with the camera, which offered neither true wide angle or telephoto. It has a solid build and yet it is a relatively light lens and easy to carry around all day without fatigue. It is perfect for Nikon DX and balances with my camera beautifully. After only one day of shooting at a favorite local lake I was stunned by the results. The first day out I produced images that I know will sell in the gallery where I show my work. And the images were so perfectly exposed they needed almost no post processing. Simply, I could not be more pleased with this lens. That said, I know it is expensive new (worth it) and being on a tight budget I took a chance and purchased it used through Amazon for half the cost. It came to me exactly as advertised; in flawless, like new condition, with a nice filter and lens hood and soft lens case. it also came much sooner than expected, taking only four days to ship. This is the first time I've ever reviewed anything but I just had to weigh-in on this one. I could not be more pleased.

A great wide angle
My first review for Amazon.com! So to cut to the chase, is this lens great? Was it worth the money? Short answer, yes! Since this lens is so expensive compared to third party lens (Tamron, Sigma, etc.) this lens needs to be great, 5 stars and it is. I use it with a Nikon D300, Photoshop Elements 7 and Epson Stylus inkjet printers. Through it's full zoom range 12-24mm I couldn't be happier in regards to resolution, color, contrast. I like the speed of f/4 as I try to avoid using flash. There are other reviewers that will talk about color fringing or distortion. I'm sure they know what they're talking about but I just don't see it in my photos. I must say that 12mm (which is 18mm 35mm film equivalent?) is a whole new world! I'm having fun! If you've been shooting film and have been waiting for digital to "catch up" I think it's finally here. With the smaller format image sensor Nikon has had to come out with a whole new line of lens and I think they are outstanding. I think we are in a new golden age for optics. I never would have thought such a wide angle could be so distortion free. When I started out in 35mm photography, reviews would talk about pincushioning with 50mm lens! Can you believe it? And here is a 12mm ZOOM and I really don't see any noticable distortion let alone something as obvious as pincushioning!SO if you can afford it the Nikon is worth every penny (and thanks for the great pricing Amazon!) but if you can't there are other less expensive choices with great specs that can meet your needs and where you can be just as creative! Enjoy!

Pricey But Worth It
If you want to shoot extreme wide angles on your Nikon digital SLR, you can choose this Nikkor lens, or a similar Sigma lens for 2/3rds the price. Spend the extra money. The Sigma lens costs you a half an f-stop in speed, about double the weight, and a complete inability to use standard filters. Plus, Sigma's optics just aren't up to Nikon standards. All said and done, the Sigma lens isn't worth the money.Which brings us to the Nikon lens: Is it worth a grand?Oh my yes.First, the cons. If you haven't already standardized on 77mm filters, then you'll have to buy all-new ones to fit this lens. That's an extra expense to keep in mind before you buy. The hood that comes with this lens doesn't snap into place as snug as it should. Getting the lens in and out of your bag, you may find the hood jiggling loose. The dinky built-in flash on Nikon's popular D70 body isn't a good fit with this lens. From about 12-18mm, the flash/lens combination will leave a dark shadow at the bottom of the frame. If you plan on shooting indoors with a flash, plan on using the Nikon SB-600 or -800.Optically, however, this lens is a dream. Typical wide-angle distortion at the extreme 12mm, but less than you might expect. You might find softness around the edges at 12mm wide-open, but otherwise this is one sharp lens. I recently took it to Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs (shooting on a 6.1mpix D70 body), and was shocked at the detail even on not-so-close objects. This lens delivers. And that's the whole point: It delivers what you can't get anywhere else for DSLR work. For that, most any price is cheap.

Lens making is an art Nikon artisans craft Nikkor optics from the finest materials, taking pride in adding their intellect and technique to bring the world's finest lenses to life. They push the leading edge of lens making, harder and harder, in their effort to provide the \"glass\" that makes the world's greatest pictures.
Features include:
Designed for Nikon D-Series digital SLR
Design enables a combination of wider angle-of-view with optical characteristics that are optimized for Nikon digital SLR camera sensors
2x Zoom ratio and variable angle-of-view from 99 degrees at 12mm to 61 degrees at 24mm. Comparable to that of an 18-36mm lens on 35mm size sensor format
Nikon design that produces a smaller image circle (the size of the image that is projected by the lens on to the sensor) enabling smaller lens diameter, and optimal image quality from center-to-edge-to-corner on the image
Exclusive Silent Wave Motor enables ultra-high-speed autofocusing with exceptional accuracy and powerful super-quiet operation
2 Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements for minimized chromatic aberration
3 Aspherical lens element for low distortion
Internal Focusing (IF) design for smoother focusing and great body balance
M/A mode enables instant switching from autofocus to manual with virtually no time lag even during AF servo operation
Nikon D-type design provides precise distance information for flash and ambient light exposure processes
Rounded diaphragm to make out-of-focus elements appear more natural
DX Nikkor is designed exclusively for use with Nikon Digital SLR models
11.8 close focusing distance throughout zoom range
