Game Hacking: Developing Autonomous Bots for Online Games

Great Read and Reference!
Would recommend to anyone wanting to learn how bots work on the inside. One thing to note to anyone interested, to really understand parts of this book you will need to know c++ or another high level programming language. This book covers a lot, even has an ASM crash course! This book gave me some strategies that I will definitely consider when starting a new bot for a game. There really is not another book out there that provides all this information in the manner Nick does. It gives you enough detail on most all of the subjects to get you in the right mindset and path to make a bot. Bravo Nick!

Hacking for ethical purposes is invaluable
You’ll learn about the basics you’ll need to reverse engineer how certain features you like in games are implemented and you can use this to inspire your own implementation.

Very good starting point to learn about Bots and game design in general.
I did not purchase my copy of Game Hacking through Amazon but I have read it and can say that it does in deed teach you some great stuff to learn how to create bots and how games are created. There are some real good examples to teach you the end around. The key for people looking at this book is you will need to know how to write code, such as C++ or other languages because the author takes us into the machine through code. He also provides some great example code and even labs for readers to use on their own to start to develop their own. What I like about this book is it takes a fair amount of information that clearly would normally take a very long time to acquire and concisely puts it into form for the reader/learner.This book isn't for some teenager trying to cheat their way through the latest game in as much as it is teaching you the ways that games are made so you can be a better gamer. Learning from the inside how a bot operates is essential to understanding the game's mechanics. By learning how to develop your own you simply can't get a better lesson! What's also great is the author, when talking certain points, relates to other chapters/pages to further help. This isn't a recipe book though. Don't expect you'll be an expert game baker by the end. This stuff takes time and practice and experience to do thoroughly. The labs and concept code are super helpful if you want to learn how to do things.Too many people want to read a short book and expect they will be able to redesign a multi-million line of code game. DUH! That doesn't happen nor did those developers who made that game just learn how to write code. You shouldn't expect that reading a couple hundred pages and you'll be an advanced expert and able to take down the masters of gaming design. But, read this book and practice the labs and you will be well on your way to that mastery. This is also a pretty good look inside Cybersecurity.

Very Practical
I used this book in terms of hacking windows applications rather than games. This book does a great job of explaining how you might use tools like process monitor or x64dbg (which has nearly the same stuff as Olly), Cheat Engine (not just for games), how to read/write memory using C++ and more. I came at it with a really good understanding of how to reverse .NET and android applications (which is fairly easy by comparison). This book really filled in gaps and brought me along to understand reversing windows application written in C++.

Great and thorough resource for beginners
I've been doing stuff like this for fun on and off for almost 2 decades. I browsed through the entire book in about an hour and found it to be a very comprehensive and exhaustive resource on the subject. I really couldn't think of much I would want to add to it for beginners wanting to learn the skills this book is targeting. There were even one or two things in there I wasn't aware of that will definitely be of use to me in the future. All important topics are pretty thoroughly explored, with examples, to get a person up and running on these technologies with a minimum amount of initial investment.

The first half of the book contained a good deal of introductory material regarding how to use Ollydbg ...
Firstly, the description on the website states that the paperback has 304 pages (as seen in the screenshot uploaded) while the actual paperback book has 277 pages only. That's 27 pages less than that described !Secondly, I feel that the book is too overpriced for the material in it.The book was released as a free Pre-Release ebook initially, with the first 125 pages in the book. Now, charging another $25 for an extra 125 pages or so, is not something that I feel worth paying for.Thirdly, I feel that while the first half of the book (the 125 pages in the pre-release edition) was written well, the second half of the book seemed to be written in a hurry (probably as the deadline for the release was approaching, I do not know). The first half of the book contained a good deal of introductory material regarding how to use Ollydbg and Cheat Engine, along with a very elementary introduction to patching compiled code. While all this material is available publicly on the internet, it was rather nice to have it in one place .If you are going forward with the idea that by reading just this book, you would be able to go ahead and build a serious Game Bot, I am sorry to say that it would be not so !Many games nowadays are "packed" or encrypted with various protectors, as well as use very advanced Anti-Cheat techniques. A lot more knowledge of those and how to bypass them or thwart them would be necessary before one could build a serious bot.All in all, I expected a lot more from this author from his final release of the book , but I found that a lot of necessary matter was skipped while there was too much focus on material that could have been skimmed.

great for starting out game hacking
great book for learning out game hacking. doesn't go too in depth though, you'll have to supplement with other books. it also feels like it features too much code.
