Absolute must-read for any would-be manly man.
But really, this book will introduce you the the world of sand casting and operating a small home made foundry. It is not a complete and exhaustive guide but more of a header and an introduction. If you are looking for a more detailed and technical book on the subject and don't mind the older type of (un)technical drawings usually found in cheap books from the mid 20th century until the late 80ies then The Complete Handbook of Sand Casting by C.W.Ammen will also be something you might want to buy along with this. What I would have done if I'd known would have been to by The Charcoal Foundry book first, read it, set up a bit of an experimental/hobby foundry and casting, get good with all that then gotten the book by C.W.Ammen if I wanted to learn the more occult side of foundry and casting work. I did the opposite and no harm done in that but it was not an ideal progression. This is probably the best starter book for a a hobbyist. If that hobbyist ever want to move unto bigger things, that comes later.

This is a great little book - I got exactly what the write-up said I would. It goes through the steps to build a small solid-fuel foundry with which you can (with the help of his other 6 books,) build a full metal-working shop with scrap aluminum and/or pot metal and an investment of time and few other relatively low-cost resources. I love the idea of these books delivering a boot-strap approach to making. The writing is straight-forward and clear, and too the point. There isn't much in the way of fluff here folks! If you buy this I think you won't be disappointed!
