I have bought several packages over the past couple of years and the wood is always good and consistent.

It's basswood. No knots. Good quality.

Some of the better Amazon bought basswood. Light, no knots, cuts clean.

The wood strips are 1x1 inch and not undersized. The basswood is of reasonable quality. They tend to be somewhat more harder than premium white basswood but not bad. Carve a piece of poplar and these will seem like butter by comparison. There are numerous 1x1 carving tutorials on the internet for beginners. More important than the wood is the quality of the knife. A good flat ground, thin bladed , razor sharp knife makes a world of difference. Such a knife will typically run from 30 dollars and up.

This basswood is excellent for carving. Every piece was in perfect shape. I ordered a different Beavercraft package of wood from Amazon and it was perfect as well. I will definitely order this again.
