Do you use the side holes. Looks to be too close to the edge of the wood and woukd split

Bryan, Yes, they are close to the corners, so to prevent splitting I pre-drilled the holes using a 1/32" to 1/16" drill bit. I wrapped a piece of blue masking tape about 1/4 inch up from the tip of the bit to give a visual clue on the depth to drill. These screws aren't that long, but you don't want to drill through your stand. I was using OAK and it is pretty tough and easy to split at the corners and this worked perfectly.
