Doesn't work with 2021 iMac
Purchased from Amazon, but I only tried to use it after a couple months after purchase. It is not recognized by the 2021 iMac and therefore I cannot use it. Unfortunately, it is beyond the window I can return to Amazon.

It works, enough said
I bought the Rioddas external unit at £19 and unfortunately I found that it wouldn't read any DVD-R's it also failed to read a regular DVD, or a data DVD for installing the Highway code.It would appear that the fault lies with the amount of power required to run it.This was not made clear at point of sale that it required a regular laptop current supply to use it, so no real fault with the equipment itself, just the use of it that wasn't clear so it went back.I should say that I'm using an Acer Switch 12, which is a 12" all in one, having little power for external drives (a bit like the microsoft surface pro and the macbook pro netbooks)Enter this unit. Firstly, it works right off the bat with just one of the USB leads (it has a thick USB lead doubled up with a thinner one, presumably to give the extra power needed for burning to the Mdiscs supplied)As it worked with the thicker lead, I've just tested like that and have to say it's played all the discs I threw at it.When I come to burn I will plug the other lead into my second USB port and see if that works. The only potential problem with that, is that my Acer has one USB 3 port and one USB-C port so I'll use an adaptor, but I don't know if the USB-C port will give enough power.A plus point is that it doesn't have a captive lead, if a lead were captive and it broke, the whole unit would have to go back, with this, the lead is separate, and it can be replaced if necessary.I have a plan though, that is to use a Powered USB 4 way block to stick the extra USB cable in that comes with this external player, the theory being that the main source of power will come from the powered USB block and not the netbook. Watch this space for an update. Here's a link to a similar powered USB block to mine: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sabrent-4-Port-Individual-Switches-HB-UM43/dp/B00JX1ZS5O/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=powered+usb+block&qid=1561293906&s=gateway&sr=8-6UPDATE: 1/7/19. Tried with external powered USB block and it's all fine. As I have a wireless mouse, it was handy to plug the mouse receiver, and the two leads of this DVD drive into the block, and then plug the block's own USB3 cable into the Acer

Won’t work on an imac
Bought this to use with my iMac (they don’t have integral disk readers). The box has a single sheet on how to set up on your mac. Doesn’t work like that. When you connect the unit you do not get the onscreen message suggested. When you insert a blank disk the unit chunters for a bit then up comes the message “unable to read this disk”. Happens with any blank, even the m disks supplied with the reader. There is also a disk supplied with a small suite of freebies. This time the Mac takes a look and informs you that they can’t be opened as they need Windows 10!The supplier really needs to remove the “works with Mac” part of their advert - it will not function. Regrettably posting mine back

Be aware that ASUS recommends you plug into two USB sockets
So I really like this drive. The fit/finish (probably the least important aspect) a very nice, but what really struck me when I first plugged it in and opened it up was the sound of the tray mechanism-- it had a really nice metal-on-metal, precision sound, unlike all the plastic parts on my last external optical, and the action of the tray felt very smooth and precise. It just felt like a much more accurately machined device than my old Samsung. There were also more visible metal parts in the tray, which I find somehow reassuring that it's a more rugged device. It's also very quiet in operation. I'm ripping the entire CD collection so the drive is getting a real workout, and it's not only quieter than the drive it's replacing, but it's also quieter than the internal drive that I'm using side by side with it. It's been a real pleasure to use.One odd thing that also happened is that this drive has been able to read discs that the internal optical drive couldn't make sense of.A few minor things to be aware of (that kept it from getting 5 stars):- A minor point is the top of the drive is kind of flexible, and it's actually easy to accidentally flex it inward enough when you're pushing the tray closed that the tray won't go in. This is somewhat of a natural action, holding the drive down with one hand while pushing the tray in with the other, so it's just a teeny bit awkward to remember to hold the drive by the sides or the back when closing the tray.- While I'm only using a single USB port to power the drive for ripping (and it seems to be happy), the instructions actually say that the Y cable is so that you can plug the drive into two different USB ports to ensure there's enough power. I suppose that will be more of an issue if you're trying to write an M-DISC as I understand the laser is more powerful and hence demands more power. But given that the number of USB ports on laptops seems to be trending downwards, you may find yourself short of USB ports if you want to use this for M-DISC creation.- The eject button is towards the centre of the drive on the front of the tray, which means you can push it accidentally as you close the drive. Pushing the tray in around the edge gives you the sense that the tray may go in crookedly and even jam, which is probably the reason the button is located just off-centre on the front of the tray. Given all of this, it would have been nicer to have the button on the top somewhere, but given that it's on the front of the tray you get why it's positioned the way it is. This is another small niggle, but one that keeps me from giving 5 stars. But these issues aside, it's a really nice drive and has already ripped a couple of dozen CDs into the NAS. I'm not sure I'll ever use the M-DISC creation capability, but it's nice to have that option.
