Be careful when adding an SSD for addl storage
First, good cyber Monday deal. Fired up with no problems, I was impressed. You can add an internal SSD for additional storage.I decided to buy a 500GB SSD while there were some good bargains. Watched the video in the Q&A and seemed very easy. It is.....but:Make sure you watch the video and open it exactly as they show in the video. There is a fragile very thin ribbon connector that connects from the SSD mount on the bottom of the case to the main board. I opened correctly but there isn't much slack in the ribbon and it easily popped out of the connection on the SSD mount. The end of the ribbon just has some tiny gold contacts, not a sturdy plug. After I easily inserted the SSD I now had to try to get that ribbon inserted back in to the connection. This wasn't easy! The ribbon is fragile so it won't take much distress and some force is required to get it back in and then hope you got it inserted correctly and all the contacts properly aligned!Wait a second- I kinda think that ribbon wasn't inserted correctly in the first place and that is why it slipped out so easily. I was ready to return the unit because of this but I tried one more time and this time I guess I got it right. After each try you have to turn on the unit and see if it sees the SSD, more tedium. After a number of tries I finally got it inserted correctly. So, be careful when installing an SSD. Mine, with the addl SSD, is now (so far) working fine. Here is a link where you can see the video in the Q&A: https://www.amazon.com/ask/questions/Tx1ME0EUHPV8DHO/ref=ask_dp_dpmw_al_hza

Good mini for pfsense firewall
After experiencing problems with another vendors product (multi-NIC and designed for firewall use) and after returning two units, I decided to give this mini a try as a pfsense firewall. It has two 1GB NIC's, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage with a snappy J4125 Intel CPU. Total overkill for this small firewall application but since it supports AES-NI and is also Win11 compatible so it's a future proof solution. No problems with Win11 when I was doing initial testing on the bench. Satisfied it works reliably, I removed Win11 and installed the latest version of pfsense (ver 2.60). No problems with that either.I was hoping that I could use the built-in WiFi as a separate firewall segment for some sensor data but the embedded (not replaceable) WiFi chip does not support AP mode. Installed an external AP router instead.Technical support was very responsive (use the Amazon links for fast responses) and provided accurate information. Reliability is the only concern right now. I've had the firewall running for a week now at a clients remote location and it's working as expected - error free.

~3 month before M.2 Sata SSD started failing, another month for device itself to start failing
Update (07/2022):Company's support is very good, got me a replacement in very reasonable time. (Changing rating to 4.5/5)-----------------------------------Device failed after ~6 month of use. After 3 month, SSD (m.2 Sata) drive started failing, Windows refused to boot.Found out that that drive started developing uncorrectable sectors (from SMART status).Replacing a no name ssd with one from Samsung fixed it, for a bit. After a month or so it started shutting off every few hours, and wouldn't reboot unless physically unplugged from power. Though it might be overheating, but sensors didn't show anything of sort.On the 6th month, it started failing to boot at all, staying for minutes in BIOS and not proceeding to boot device (whether it is SSD or USB) for long time.Disappointing.

Network Unstable
I bought this to be pfsense firewall - which it is advertised as such. The good:- The J4125 has enough cpu muscle to handle a symmetrical gig fiber connection no problem.- Machine only consumes 8 watts as reported by my Kill-O-Watt meter when the internet is stressed. The bad:- AES Encryption is reported in pfsense as "AES-NI CPU Crypto: Yes (inactive)" and I can't figure out how to get it working.- The fan constantly runs full speed and is louder than it needs to be - but I don't really care because it sits in my basement. Anyone who wants to use this connected to their TV be warned the fan is too loud. The ugly:- Network is Realtek. The network controller completely and randomly locks up. The whole box isn't locked up, the local console can be used to shut it down and power it back on to get it working again. A cold reboot will not fix the network being locked up - must be a power cycle. For a network router this is far less than ideal. Sometimes it is two hours, sometimes 30 days between lockups. If you read other reviews this is not a unique circumstance to me.- It will boot and work in headless mode (no mouse/keyboard/monitor). However, I found if the HDMI and a usb keyboard remains plugged in the network will be far more stable - weeks between lockups - perhaps the firmware on this machine is unstable.- If you watch or read reviews of this machine it will state/show name brand (Crucial) memory and nvme drives. I opened my unit up and they have generic white label components from some third rate Chinese supplier using generic third rate memory chips (no micron/samsung/hynix to be found in here!). Full on bait & switch. If those part are from random suppliers it seems likely is the rest of the machine is also shady or counterfeit parts.Bottom line: spend a little bit more money and buy a used thin client or mini desktop form factor Dell/HP/Lenovo from Ebay instead.

Hard disk failure
The drive failed after a few months of use. It does not boot anymore. I attempted to re-install the OS, but it did not detect the hard disk.

opnsense runs quiet and stable, easy setup
The unit comes with windows 11 and works very smooth. The unit runs well with latest opnsense. Easy setup. The opnsense with firewall but without IPS enabled could pump almost 9xxMbps in both directions. with opnSense/ with intrusion prevention services enabled, the speed test could be approx 280Mbps in up/down over 1 Gbps fiber internet. The unit runs alway in room temperatur.I could not find the auto power on from the bios though. The bios version is 5.13, build date; 03/30/2022, model is: Green G1. Connected to customer support and they showed where is the auto power on in bios in earlier version. I still can’t see any auto power in this version of bios.Overall this mini pc is great as windows or opnsense firewall.
