Fun and educational
Rhyming and rhythm were not quite up to original Dr. Seuss standards, but still an entertaining and educational book. My granddaughter enjoys it.

Worthy of the name
What you can expect when you receive this (You already ordered it, right?) is a hardcover durable glossy exterior, and an interior of vibrant illustrations where the colors go all the way to the edge in big shapes that really pop off every page. There are a generous number of pages, with maybe just a little more text than the average Dr Seuss book, but pretty close to the same. The content impresses in a way that you might take for granted. What it does is present ideas that are familiar to my three year old son, but mixes them with new ideas and vocabulary he is less familiar with. I would like to think that the average person knows the word "abdomen," for example, but can most people point out this section on an insect? The whole book seems to play this game of establishing a base knowledge kind of idea, then expanding on it just enough to offer the kid little opportunities to know what other people don't know. I think that is at least a small part of my son's fascination with excavators and tractors is that he wants to believe that he is helping us by informing us of what his knowledge has led him to believe these machines are. Did you buy this book yet? Good! Finally!

Learn About Bugs
I got this book for two reasons - it was Dr. Seuss related and it looked like something that might help my 2-going-on-3 year old daughter's fear of bugs. While it was a Car in the Hat book, it wasn't written by Dr. Seuss himself, and it shows with some of the repetition of words in the rhyme scheme - while informative, it wasn't Seuss-like creative. However, my daughter loved it, and that is all that counts. Just wasn't a fun read to her for me (only because I loved the original Dr. Seuss books, this didn't seem to flow like one)..The important reason for my purchase was to help my daughter's fear of bugs. It did indeed help - she learned and understood that while some bugs might be scary to her, they are indeed helpful and very useful. That actually curbed some fears and honesrly, helped make being outside in the summer wonderful, so for that, I am thankful!

Very informative, but kids won't ask you to read it over and over again
My daughter loves watching The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That cartoon, so I thought it would be nice to supplement it with the books from the The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library, so she can learn more about insects without realizing it! It is very informative, colourful, has all the characters from my daughter's favorite cartoon, plus written as a poem (of course, the rhyme is not of dr. Seuss' quality and sometimes feels forced and awkward). However my biggest complain about this book is that there is no story line. In the cartoon series usually Sally and Nick would come across a problem which Cat in the Hat helps them to resolve by introducing them to some animals/plants/insects, etc. At the end the problem is solved and the kids learned something new about the featured creatures. The book just starts with the Cat in the Cat introducing himself and inviting everybody to look around and find insects.- he talks about classification of insect (who IS and who is NOT an insect and why)- three parts of insect's body- insects' eyes are insects' antennae- how different insects protect their lives- little bit about ants (how strong they are)- a bit more on bees (everybody takes care of the queen, communicate by dancing and collect pollen, which helps more flowers to grow)- little bit on fleas (animals itch cz of them)- why flies buzz- little bit on mosquitoes (only females bite)- caterpillar into a butterfly- firefights (they flash, put them into a jar and then let them go- that's it!)My daughter asked me to read this book once, when it just arrived. After that I would just grab it off the shelf with the requested books and read it towards the end. She wouldn't mind, but would never ask for it herself!
