Can this be used for hermit crabs?

Yes it can. The bottom part is deep enough that a crab would not be able to climb up and get out plus it comes with a locking door. Although I would think this is a little big for hermit crabs as it is very tall more so made for snakes and lizards, climbing reptiles.
