Foam Patterning and Construction Techniques: Turning 2D Designs into 3D Shapes 1st Edition

This book is amazing. I can't believe I even hesitated buying it. Inside I found all the information I have been scouring the internet to find. Mary goes into detail about what kinds of foams to use for different projects and some really helpful advice about not choosing the wrong one - for example upholstery foam is cheaper so it's good for prototypes but is light sensitive and if not covered it will crumble apart over time. So it might be a bad choice for a final build. Costume building can be complex and there are many factors to consider and Mary really dives into how to solve the problem of what material to use for every step of the process.The chapters on subtractive and additive patterning are amazing and highly detailed. I had no idea you could make patterns this way!

This is a wonderful and very detailed book about making patterns and constructing 3D objects out of foam. All of the information one would need to design and create original foam objects are in this book (types of foam, adhesives, making patterns, cutting foam, etc). The author also supplies pictures and information on many current brands of products used in foam construction. Included at the end of the book are full directions for creating 6 unique projects. This book would help any novice make their first foam based puppet and challenge them to more complex projects too! There are also interesting details and information for the seasoned builder. The hand drawn illustrations are delightful and the step by step photos and understandable instructions make me wish I'd written this book myself! Mary McClung covers safety, tools, materials, research and assembly but for me the best part is her instruction on Patterning, which is tricky to teach but secures that each creation is well formed and unique.

The book is very well made and instructive. Would be an asset to drama and art teachers. I bought it cause I was interested in making puppets for my grand-daughter- way to advanced for kid puppets.

Mary McClung has created an extremely valuable book for those who fabricate with foam. Her rich experience and sense of humor permeate the text and its examples.This is now a required purchase for the University of Connecticut's Puppet Arts Majors.

Super detailed information about foam, cutting, gluing etc. I was hoping for more uses than just puppet examples. Like scenery or props.
