Lousy book teaches math that gets the real-world answer wrong.
This is a lousy book. For example, the motivating problem for section 12-3, Inscribed Angles reads "Three high school soccer players practice kicking goals from the points shown in the diagram. All three points are along the arc of a circle. Player A says she is in the best position because the arc of her kicks toward the goal is wider than the arc of the angle of the other players' kicks. Do you agree? Explain" The drawing shows that the goal line is a chord of the circle. Then a theorem stating the inscribed angle is half of its intercepted arc is stated, and the student is instructed to draw the angle each player makes with the goal posts, implying player A is wrong. However, player A is correct about the soccer because the math problem fails to take into account the finite diameter of the ball, which blocks players at some positions on the circle from a straight kick into the goal even if the goalposts were lines. Soccer goalposts have a roughly rectangular cross-section, which makes the strategy of player A even better. Students do not need to be taught math problems that get the real-world answer wrong.
