Mastering Hand-Lettering: Your Practical Guide to Creating and Styling the Alphabet

I recently developed an interest in hand lettering and didn't know where to start. This book has a little bit of everything you need to get you started. There's an entire chapter dedicated to instructing you on how to draw letters, both uppercase and lowercase, in the serif and script style. There is also room to practice in the book, but not a lot a whole lot of practice pages to the point of excess (which is fine, I have my own paper to practice on). There are also some helpful tips on structuring your work so that you can create a beautiful piece of your own. The author covers lettering styles (serif,sans-serif,script,ornate,dimensional, blackletter, illustrative, chalk lettering, and drop cap), and gives beautiful examples of each, as well as an explanation of her process through text and diagrams.My favorite part of this book has to be the final chapter, explore and create, in which the author shows you how you can add swashes and filigree, shadows, different kinds of crossbars, manipulate apexes and vertices, different ways to style your serifs, and drawing letters on a slanted/wavy/curved path. There's more than enough material crammed into this book to inspire you to produce your own work of art.I hope this review was helpful. I tried to cover everything I wanted to know about the book before I bought it, but couldn't really find. I bought it on a whim, not really knowing whether or not it was what I was looking for. It turned out to be exactly what I'd hoped it would be.

Love this book. I have so many books for hand lettering and this is a unique wonderful addition. Although it goes over the basics like other, you see a lot more of Mye’s sketch process and how she gets to the finished product. Wonderful book.Book quality is excellent. Only “downside,” and I would HARDLY call it that...is there are lots of practice pages on the individual letters and it takes up quite a bit of the beginning of the book.

I think this is my very favorite lettering book I've ever purchased, and I'm kinda an addict so that is saying something! Not only is it informative and helpful, but I feel like it is different from other hand lettering books I've done. I really love getting a view into the author's process and how she builds her stunning lettering pieces. If that isn't enough, it is also really a quality book the paper is nice, the colors are vibrant, and it is really visually gorgeous to flip through! Such a great resource for a great price from an incredibly talented artist! <3

I am so happy with this book! As an experienced illustrator and Letterer, I don't buy books on those topics often. When I saw this book I knew I wanted it! I love Mye's style and I was excited for the opportunity to learn from her. The book did not disappoint! It really breaks down each letter and gives an in-depth look on lettering! It really breaks down serif lettering. Captitals and lowercase each have either a full page or a two page spread! I would definitely recommend it!

I chose this book out of a myriad of other lettering books because of the rave reviews it got, and I'm so glad I did! The book looks great, and the techniques are clearly explained. This is a fantastic book!

Has a lot of instructions and detailed in layman’s term. Much better instructions than an expensive online class I enrolled that teaches the same, but I didn’t really learn anything.

This book is really great for beginners and helps you understand all the basics and how to get from a skeleton to a full letter form. Would recommend for a beginner and intermediate letterers!
