Q: 1) For the 'Double - Decker', what are the interior dimensions of the lower section? 2) Is it possible to build this without the middle shelf?

Inside dimensions of the bottom shelf is 19" W x 22" D x 16.5" H. The middle shelf holds a lot of support, without it I believe the box will be unstable, you could DIY it. Might be able to use wood dowels as supports. Hope this helps!

Yes. I think it will fit, might be a tight squeeze. You could DIY it and use a soldering Iron to melt an inch off or so around the rim of your box to fit it in there. I use a box that is 20Lx17Wx10H, there is room on both sides of my box to hold the scoop, the bottom shelf is 16.5"H. Hope this helps!
