beautiful waffles and nice sandwiches
We tried the waffle part first, which worked perfectly. We bought the luxury belgian style waffle mixture for it and within 8-10 minutes we had these georgeous giant waffles on our plates. Wonderful. We tried the sandwich part later on and it is nice too if you well fill up your sandwiches. Make sure you have nice big slices of bread, it works very well with them (not so much with smaller slices)Definitely worth the money, would buy it again.

Very easy to use, handy extra plates for other things. Easy to change or wash the plates.
A very good price, stylish for what it is, and handy to have the removable plates for other things like waffles, though I doubt I'll be doing that. Just toasted sandwiches for me.I don't know if the plates are dishwasher friendly or not, but the couple of times I've used this they don't seem to need cleaning, they're very non-stick.I would've liked a recipe book with this, and had to do some research on Google to find out how long to cook the sandwiches for, but that didn't take long, and 5 minutes of cooking time is perfect. There is a reasonable height allowance for your sandwiches, though with sourdough bread and multiple fillings it can be a bit hard to close the lid. But it does close.I look forward to many more tasty toasted sandwiches with this, but I'll give the waffles and other things a miss. Nice to know you can if you want though.

Makes great waffles
After our much-loved 25 year-old Tefal sandwich/waffle maker popped its clogs we knew that finding a worthy replacement would be a challenge. After looking at the many machines available and reading dozens of reviews, we chose the VonShef, not only because of the generally good reviews, but also because it had a 2 year guarantee. We tried the waffle maker first using my wife’s own recipe (140g plain flour, 35g semolina, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, 225ml water, 55ml milk, 2 teaspoons vanilla essence and a pinch of salt) which makes about 4 waffles. They take about 7 minutes to cook and look and taste very good. Incidentally, the waffles are a man-sized 13cms x 13cms in size and nearly 3cms thick. We next tried the sandwich plates, but in our family we use shortcrust pastry, not bread. We made our favourite apple turnovers (delicious with a scoop of vanilla ice cream), rolling the pastry out thinly into 2 pieces 16cms x 29cms each and placing one sheet over all 4 segments (after the maker has heated up and being careful not to burn fingers), filling the hollows generously with diced eating apple then dusting with ground cinnamon before adding the top layer of pastry and closing the lid to cook until lightly browned. They self-seal while cooking and are easily separated after being removed from the machine. Another resounding success and we can’t wait to try it with our savoury fillings. In sum, we’re delighted with this VonShef sandwich/waffle maker and give a full 5 stars.Just a few points to finish off with:1. Our maker is a 900W model, not 800W (as stated in the handbook and on the Amazon web page) which means that it heats up quicker and cooks faster.2. After making the waffles we noticed that some of the steam had condensed inside the machine. As it cools, removing the plates (unplug from the mains first!) and turning it om its side while in the open position allows the water (about a tablespoon’s worth) to escape.3. It’s not mentioned elsewhere, but to get the extended (2 year) warranty you need to register your details on the vonshef.com website.UpdateAfter a few week's almost daily use, the only annoying feature we've found is when fitting the removable plates. The spring-loaded fingers which hold the plates down are about 2mm too short and so are not long enough to hold the plates securely. Sometimes you think you've fitted the plates properly only to find one coming loose during use.. When making waffles we've found that a can of spray vegetable oil is excellent for lubricating the plates to stop the waffles sticking. We're also changed our recipe to Classic Waffle Recipe from Allrecipes.com which produces superb waffles. Also, we're making smaller waffles now by not filling the waffle plates completely and using a 1/4 or 1/3 cup size as a measuring ladle.

Great toasties, but not so great waffles
So I’ve had this waffle/sandwich maker for about 3 weeks now and after consistent use I’m still 50/50 about this product.Although the sandwich plates are quite large for a standard load of bread as many people have mentioned, it’s had no effect on my toasties at all and they have all come out sealed and perfectly toasted in less than 5 minutes! As a toastie maker it does the job well.On the other hand, the waffle aspect has been quite a let down. The first day I received the product I made waffles straight away but unfortunately they just weren’t cooking, and were still soggy and raw even after 15 minutes! Initially I put this down to my mixture being too dense, so I’ve since tried again with a range of pre-mixed waffle mixes and other home recipes but still no luck and the same results. I’m not sure if it’s to do with the plates as the machine itself works well with the toastie plates, but I would recommend buying a better quality machine if you want good waffles.

easy to clean as the plates are removable
Well made, easy to clean as the plates are removable. They are easy to change over and look well constructed and solid. I have many VonShef products as they have a good clean design and look contemporary. This fits well into my collection. I haven't fully mastered waffles yet, as you're pouring liquid batter in I think the key is to cook for a fair while then pop in oven.

Faulty on first use :-(
During first time use we heard popping noise from toaster thinking this an electrical fault we turned off immediately. It was only then did we note that the actual toaster front lip paint work was bevelled and in curves. The toaster had melted the paintwork on front by handle. Not good at all. immediately contacted company who responded with same msg to email and photos sent to them. After strong words on last email i finally received a response with attachments to send back toaster maker. This has been sent back free via MY Hermes on 28 December at local pick up shop. Am awaiting a replacement item however i have clearly stated if same fault then this will also be returned and a refund requested. So proof will be in the pudding so to speak. But first impression very poorly made but fingers crossed its a one off. will amend review once new item received and used.2ns one arrived !! Same fault :-(. Appliance paintwork cracks when heats up. Not good make. Company gave refund and toaster binned ! Don't waste your money look elsewhere!!
