Use the yarn recommended first then experiment with other yarns.
Easy pattern to follow, I have knit it and it came out a lovely pattern. If you use good yarn James Brent cotton you get a nice finished garment.

Take the time to read the whole pattern before you start knitting
This pattern is lovely once finished but the instructions are a bit on the complicated side.It took quite a while to understand the pattern at the beginning had to keep re-reading but once you got past the first pattern the rest was straight forward except for the sleeves
