Evans Torque Drum Key

I've been playing for over 30 years and I'm embarrassed to admit that I've always struggled tuning drums - to the extent that I've avoided doing it unless absolutely necessary and didn't enjoy doing it. I've previously relied on finger tightening, then matching turns on a drum key on opposite lugs and testing the tone around the edge of the drum. However, I just never seemed to get it quite right and would end up tweaking to try and get rid of overtones. This little gadget is so simple to use. Finger tightening first as before, but then turning the key until the plastic section clips away from the main section. You start off with it on a loose setting on the adjustable dial underneath and then tighten further as you tune until you get to the required tension. You do need to ensure your lug screws are able to rotate freely.I fully tuned one of my kits with double heads in less than an hour and tap tested round the edge as I went. They tuned so easily and with none of the overtones I'd occasionally struggled with. It has made me less apprehensive about tuning my drums. Very pleased and it's staying in my drum bag.

Very satisfied with the product thus far. It does exactly what it says it does easily and very accurately as far as I can tell, so all good. Tuned my Gretsch kit up very easily, however, my Ludwig Breakbeat Kit's tension rods are not standard by any means. Sharpen up Ludwig!!! Already replaced some for that very reason. Looks like I will have to replace them all. Not Evans fault I hasten to add. So 5 stars overall. As far as sturdy is concerned, 3 stars at present. I will have to see after a few months how the piece is holding up under fire, like I'm gonna be retuning every week.

Good quality drum key, very pricey though

If you've got a well kept drum kit with clean and greased lugs, this tool it excellent and will help tune your toms really quickly (providing you follow the instructions). Might need a tiny tweak after use, just to even out any slight wobbles as you tap round the edge of your tom / lugs.If you, like me, are using this on a second hand drum kit, with crusty rusting lugs, this tool is very little help. Any sign of rust increases the lug friction / tension and leaves this tool useless. This is NOT a slight on the product though, just a word of warning for any prospective purchasers who own a crusty lugged kit!

Takes a lot of the guesswork out of fitting new heads or tuning your drums.

I find it a fantastic way of being confident all rods are tensioned the same (or thereabouts) and more importantly to the same level. When I used to tune just by sound, I found overall pitch would just creep up as I tried to tune all points the same. But now I can head straight for a low, mid or high tuning really quickly. Saw a Drumeo review on tuning that was very complimentary about the Evans torque key, but they did say it was perhaps less suitable for older drums where hoop warping or dodgy rod threads might mean all rods might not tension the same.

Evans Torque KeyFreaking fixed my sound including overtones in one afternoon on the whole 5 piece kit. Go Evens torque key. I feel it's essential equipment. Not a single bad thing to say about this product.I do feel that this item along with the drumsticks I ordered in the same oment could have all arrived in one box together instead of 4 seperate boxes.

Purchased by Mt grandson for his dad who loved it. Said it is good quality and works perfectly

I bought this product even though there were several mixed reviews about it. I am glad I did. I am a beginner and have only tuned my kit by ear once before. I used this key for the first time 2 days ago as I bought a second bass and floor tom to add to my kit. I had to assemble my new drums when they arrived and tune them. There are many instructional videos on youtube on how to use this key but, in my opinion, not very good and not much help to me. The instructions that came with this torque key was not very clear either. To use this properly, you should turn the dial counter-clockwise all the way to zero until it stops (this was not mentioned in the product instructions or any of the instructional videos I've seen). Then, you can set the tension you want and start tuning your drums in the star pattern as usual. Once the tension is reached, the key will click and you can move on to the other lugs. Of course, you should only turn each lug 1/4 at a time and not turn it all at once until you hear the click. For me, I still fine tune my drums by listening after all the lugs have reached the same tension. I should mention that the dial on the key can go around twice. This means that if you want to set your tension at, say 12, you would turn the dial clockwise passed zero and set it to 2. At least, this is how I used this key and it seems to work for me as my drums sound pretty good. I think of this key as just a tool to help you tune your drums quicker with not much guess work, especially, if you're not good at tuning by ear. It was well worth what I paid for.
