The making of the legend
After a couple of weaker novels, Flynn returns to form by taking us back to Mitch Rapp's origins and training. It is a well structured novel with a number of interesting characters, Rapp of course but also Stan Hurley, Rapp's original mentor and training officer.Luckily this book did not contain the many typos on the first issues in the US so there were no distractions in tearing through the pages and seeing the early Mitch Rapp and his first assignments. There are still a few gaps that the author does not share with us (how Rapp became so good at martial arts, other then to have him described as a natural) but is it still great stuff. Set at the time of the troubles and kidnapping culture in Beirut the US are losing both assets and influence in the area when one of their agents is captured and it may fall to the new unofficial 'black ops' team to try and get him out.So we see the tensions starting to bubble up in the Middle East, we see the mistrust between all parties and a frustration within elements of the CIA that their hands are ties and a new approach may be needed - the perfect time for someone like Rapp...It's a great thriller and one of Flynn's best in my opinion. Oh and the stand out bit is a torture scene featuring Jack Hurley, humour of the blackest sort.Recommended.

Mitch Rapp's origin myth
I first got into Vince Flynn with the outstanding "Transfer of Power". In "American Assassin", Flynn gives us the origin myth of super-tough, resourceful hero Mitch Rapp - his selection, training and development into an extraordinary US "wet work" asset. I found the story-telling compelling and exciting; and the plot gripping. Definitely worth a try if you like fast-moving action thrillers.

A cracking read
Enjoyed the film a few years ago and finally got around to reading the book. What a great storyline and thoroughly believable with an all-action lead character who’s a combination of Jason Bourne and Jack Reacher.About to start the second book in the series and really looking forward to another, hopefully great read.

Cliche with a decent plot - but a wasted opportunity
Vince Flynn is expected to pump out a novel every year. So how good can it possibly be? It was an okay read but the cliches and neocon silliness was just plain predictable. I expected a better ending because I found the plot to be well paced. This is my first and very likely last Mitch Rapp adventure. I have always been fascinated by the mind of an assassin. I always regarded them as killers first but whose hunger for death was channeled for political means. If this is the novel that reveals Rapp then it did a poor job of doing so. I have no doubt that this character has had great adventures and thrilled fans of the books for the past decade, but to waste such an opportunity is disappointing. For a ten year old character, this story should have been a 500 page read that delved deep into his psychological foundations. Who was his father or mother and how did they shape his life? The writer expects us to believe that he was only a gifted athlete from the suburbs who happened to choose the life of an assassin after his girlfriend was tragically killed in a terrorist attack. I should give American Assassin only 2 stars but I have to give credit to Mr. Flynn's competent portrayals of Hurly, the Russian characters and the Sayyed character.I expected better from something so celebrated. A wasted opportunity.

American Assasin
Good read and intriguing going back to the start and reading about how Rapp became Rapp.I didn't enjoy this as much as the original series but it does fill in nice gaps in the story of Rapp just a shame we won't get the read the final book in the trilogy. Flynn was a gifted writer and one that will be missed.Disappointing thing is and it's the same in all of Flynn's books is that the proof reading is embarrassing. I've never read a book with as many mistakes in it as the series of Rapp book has. Twice in the same page it refers to Hurley when it should be Ridley. It's amateur and since it's gone through all of the books it should have been rectified. How can flat out wrong names not be picked up?

Brilliant author
I read this as my first Mitch Rapp book & am glad I did. Exciting, bit of humour & the good guys come out on top. So glad I found this author, it was all because I read a review about this was being turned into a film that made me want to read it first & I'm so glad I did. I would recommend all new Vince Flynn converts read this & Kill Shot first the proceed with the rest. I hope Mr Flynn goes on to write many more of the same.

Gripping
I have read all of the Vince Flynn books and the Mitch Rapp series and just finished American Assassin againThey are all riveting and give in depth knowledge of the American mindset and structure of politics machinery and functioning of the US security servicesLarge parts are believable as to the threats to the West from internal and external terroristsThe actions of our heroes like Mitch Rapp fire the imagination of how most people would like to deal with the the ‘Baddies’These books have kept me sane during the Pandemic and I may well read them all againI know that Vince Flynn sadly passed away a few years ago whilst writing these books but others have taken up the pen and I am sure Vince would be really proud of his successors

A fantastic action-packed novel about a trained assassin named Mitch Rapp.
As a person who loves well-written spy and assassin fiction novels while I was browsing on Amazon, I came across a series of novels written by Vince Flynn, which surprisingly I had never heard of and never read any of his novels in the past. After doing a little research of my own I decided to read this book (American assassin: A thriller by Vince Flynn) first (even though it is actually the 11th book in his series) and move on to the others he has written in the order they were presented. As soon as I received the book and began reading it, I could not put it down for very long because I could not wait to get back to the novel. The main character in this book is Mitch Rapp, who while in college was recruited to join the CIA, after the Pam AM Lockerbie terrorist attack. At 23 years old he is the youngest to have been recruited for this special secret assassin unit. He is constantly under supervision, and they are suspicious of his abilities and skills. Some think he is not who he claims to be, and he is constantly being tested at every turn. There is no question he is physically in fantastic shape, and he catches on very quick to anything he is taught like shooting skills. I really enjoyed this book from the very first action-packed page. If you are a fan of spy assassin type novels that are well-written and great reads you should check out this series by Vince Flynn.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Tactical Principles of the most effective Combative Systems).
