Great content; poor construction
Book arrived as promised. Perfect condition. Very informative and helpful. I just received my copy and have already found it very useful. My one and only complaint is with the quality of the printing. The pages are very thin, and the cover is also thin. The notes I've scribbled in the margins with an ink pen are visible on the opposite side. If I use truly as a reference and keep coming back to it (which I expect to do), I doubt it will have a long life.

The best gets even better!
If you are a composer and you ever write for percussion, you should have this book. It is well-written, immaculately detailed, and with the newly released 2nd edition now has great online video components to go along with it. No other orchestration book covers percussion anywhere near this well.

Insanely good and useful!
I never thought I would find such an incredible guide to the world of percussion! I've been a professional composer for over 20 years and there's always that one thing or one drum or one little articulation that you can't remember how to write and you're stuck having to call up a percussionist or spend half an hour Googling it. This book is so well written and indexed, plus the massive bonus of a website companion for all the sounds and examples, it's incredibly under-priced for what you get! Kudos to Mr. Solomon for an astonishing achievement!

A must have for musicians.
I'm not a percussionist but I am interested in music composition and production. This book is extremely well put together, interesting and digestible. It includes an online companion with examples that make the whole thing feel like its own little music seminar. I can't recommend this book enough. Especially useful for music students with limited knowledge about the world of percussion.

A Must-Have for all Serious Composers/Arrangers
Just like Elaine Gould's "Behind Bars" is supremely essential for music engraving and notation, Solomon's "How to Write for Percussion" is so useful for anyone wanting to write percussion parts. While you can get information from orchestration manuals and guides, this book is FAR more in-depth, and delves deeply and comprehensively into idiosyncrasies of instruments, how fast performers can play, how to notate accurately.Take care of your percussionists by making sure their parts are written accurately! Solomon's book is absolutely worth the investment!
