Not really necessary.
ehh. It is what it is. A character workbook. It shows you the characters and provides squares to practice on. But honestly, unless your teacher requires it, it's a waste of money. There are online sources where you can find character stroke orders, and all you need is paper and a pen to practice (or a brush if you're feeling going that way). This book doesn't come with any bonus writing exercises that would make it a worthwhile purchase. You're better off just writing random sentences in your free time.

Great (group of) books!
I lived in China for two years, then returned to go back to school. This semester I decided to audit a Chinese course to see if I could get it back/improve on what I knew. This (and the two associated books) was perfect for expanding my vocabulary and grammar in a direction different from what I learned in China. In China, they taught exactly what I needed to know to talk with people that day, or travel that weekend. They knew that people could get by without advanced grammar skills, so I knew very little of that. This book won't help you perfect your tones - you really need to go there for that - but it will make your Chinese sound more educated and proper.

Note on the textbook Integrated Chinese Level 2 Part 2
The Integrated Chinese textbook series is an excellent reference for beginners. The approach to learning involves believable characters, telling stories that reflect typical college student issues. The series appears to be up to date with current idioms. Moving from level to level and part to part, the series becomes progressively harder. The printing is excellent with high-quality paper and images. The stories offer examples of sentence constructions and word choice that may be used to create other stories of one's own invention. Level 2 Part 2 steps over the "traditional-vice-simplified" issue by offering both in one textbook. Overall, a pleasant language textbook.

I returned this item, but I was not given credit for the return. Essentially I lost the money.

If you print out the Hanzi grid and follow along ...
If you print out the Hanzi grid and follow along the stroke order via an online source, you've saved yourself plenty of money. And honestly, if you've done the previous levels, you can intuitively figure out the stroke-order.Only bought this for a class whose teacher refused to let us do this.
