How often does it need to be changed or replaced ?

I cut the replacement filter in half, and replace a half of it every month.

Does any1 know if you can double up on the pads in a Fluval U4 instead of using the polyclear or polycarbon cartridges too??

You could if they fit but the filter will not work anywhere near as efficiently.
