Super Easy to Follow
Knitting Basics for Beginners: Step by Step Visual by Katrina Gale is a step by step guide through the basics knitting steps. It also includes tips to repairs common knitting mistakes and methods of joining pieces together.I wish I had Knitting Basics for Beginners when I first learned to knit some 35 years ago. No one has ever explained so succinctly how stitches different and how to best decrease stitches, but my favorite section was on gauging. It is easy for beginners to assume that if they use the needles and yarn recommended in the pattern that the size of the garment will automatically be correct. Gale did an excellent job of explaining why gauge is so important and how to measure it before ever delving into a huge project. When Katrina Gale titled her book Knitting Basics for Beginners: Step by Step Visual, she was not kidding. She includes many visuals. I first read the book on a tablet and truly appreciated how with a simple double tap, the small images magnified to a size that was easy to follow.Gales writing style is very conversational and lacks pretension. She could just as easily be your lifelong knitting friend as an unknown author, and that easy within her writing made it easy to understand the instructions and relax. After all, as she mentions in the book. Everyone starts out as a beginner and will feel clumsy at first.I highly recommend Knitting Basics for Beginners: Step by Step Visual for anyone who is learning to knit or returning to knitting after a long hiatus.

Not very helpful if you never have knitted
I have never knitted and bought this book to learn how...but it was not very helpful. The line drawings of the placement hands, yarn and needles was very difficult to follow and the description of what to do is not at all helpful if you have never knitted before! I tried quite a few times to figure it out but to no avail.... I think actual photographs of what you do at each step would be much better than the drawings.....IF you have never knitted before I would not recommend this book.

it seemed like no matter how hard I tried
I only tried to knit once before in my life, and it was a disaster. Even though I work well with crafts, it seemed like no matter how hard I tried, the needles wouldn't cooperate and the yarn would inevitably end up in a tangled mess of horror. After being suggested this guide, I was skeptical, but I still made it a point to borrow my mom's pair of needles, a fresh ball of yarn, and begin reading. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. Everything worked smoothly, the knots fell into place, and the questions I had were answered in every section in a straightforward, extremely helpful way. The technical terms were explained, and I was patiently guided through the basics regardless of my own mistakes at first.I would recommend it to any beginner knitter who hasn't had the best luck with yarn.

Great book!
I bought this for my 83 yr old Mom. She has Alzheimer’s and was wanting to knit but can’t remeber the basics. It has been invaluable and allowed her a to do something she has always loved.

Awesome!
I recently took up knitting as a hobby. This book was an EXCELLENT how-to guide on knitting basics. It makes you feel as though the author is right along side you, instructing your next stitch. The text is clear and easy-to-understand and better yet, the color illustrations show you the exact placement of your needle and hands. I highly recommend this book for those who are just starting to knit!

A great book for any beginners looking to learn knitting fast
I would TOTALLY recommend this! I recently learned to crotchet and many told me if I could crotchet, I could knit. I stumbled across this light and easy read. Filled with illustrations and CLEAR step-by-step instructions, I'm excited to continue on my first project! Highly recommend.

Must read book for knitting lovers
Growing up I saw lot of knitting going on around me, I was never interested in it, but now that I have grown older, I started to take interest in it, but realized what was so easy to learn as kids are not so easy when you are grown up. I needed a systematical approach to learning new things. After seeing this book, I knew this is the approach I was looking for, this book has clear and precise instructions along with images that explains the "the How". Great book for any beginner to learn knitting.

Do not buy this book!
Absolutely useless. Black and white pictures are not helpful. I've been knitting for years and had a very hard time with explanations. The book was purchased as gift for a beginner. After I looked through the best thing just return it.

First impression: disappointed
I first learned how to knit when I was a kid but subsequently forgot how to do it. I bought this book to help me relearn.First impressions aren't great. The book is self published. Looking at the date stamp at the back, my copy was printed specifically for me after I placed the order. As a self printed volume it lacks the polish of a book from a larger publishing house. There is at least one typo in the book (page 9), and the formatting feels basic. The illustrations are black and white but seem clear enough. While I have yet to follow the instructions for knitting, the book has failed to address my first question on the subject: can I knit left handed? As far as my browsing has taken me, handedness doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere in the book. Is it not recommended? Does everyone knit right-handed for a reason? Or is this a glaring oversight? As an aspiring knitter I have no idea what the answer to this is.All of these things combined are really making me question my purchase.Updated: I have subsequently had a discussion with various knitter friends and came to the conclusion that I should try continental-style knitting, at which point, this book became pretty much useless. I've learned that the style of knitting in this book is the most common style: English style (not that that is mentioned!). Continental knitting isn't covered at all but works great for me. So that's that!I'll keep the book around for a while and see if the trouble-shooting section ends up being useful, if it isn't, I'll donate it to the nearest free little library and hope that someone else can benefit from it.
